Blue Shift Free to Half-Life owners?

I heard that this is free for people who have Half-Life and I looked around and other sources mention it too. How do I get it for free though? I have the original Half-Life. Is the free option not available because it was from a gift code my brother got me for my birthday?

As far as i know it's not free but it was almost free in the latest steam sale. The whole halflife pack was only 9.95 including halflife 2 and episode 1 and 2. It included the original halflife , blue shift and opposing forces as well for this price.
Price for blueshift has gone back to regular 4.99 . It is still not bad at this price for an old game.

oh that would make more sense , i got source free originally too just by having halflife on disc but can't remember anymore how it all worked.

I have Half life and wasn't free when I bought Blue Shift yesterday, however is was only 74p

I had original retail HL1, bshift and OpFor but lost the CD long ago so no CD key to register it via "add a game".
Strangley, non-Steam HL1 and OpFor run without CD in drive but not bshift!

If you input the CD key from a retail copy of any of the HL1 era games (don't have a list) you get them all for free. It was something that started way back when Steam first came out. I guess it was partly done to get people to use Steam for more than just HL2.
