Opinions on this game? Worth the buy?
Title. Would like to know for all VTM fans if you liked this game. I saw in the reviews that most people criticize the jankiness and stuff but do you think is THAT much to make it a horrible experience? I'm thinking of buying it.

I'm a VtM fan and I liked it, but I'm a huge fan of games like Sherlock Holmes: Crime and Punishments and The Council. It has jank, BigBadWolf are still bad at facial animation years after The Council was criticized for its facial animation, but the depth of the story and characters and mechanics IMO overcomes that. The game is what we call "Eurojank". Punching far above its weight in ambition.

I think it's important to distinguish between people who are fans of VtM, and people who are fans of VtM: Bloodlines. Because those are very different things. This is not a game for people wanting the Bloodlines experience. Just as Paper Mario isn't a game for people wanting the Mario 64 experience. It's an attempt to translate the tabletop game's ideas into a narrative RPG.

I recommend just reading through the Steam reviews and looking at what people like, what people don't like.

If you're looking outside Steam reception-wise, bear in mind that the launch version was VERY buggy, and you couldn't skip dialogue, and this was quite frustrating for some people. Those problems were solved.

Depends on what kind of game you're looking for.

If you're expecting something akin to Bloodlines or Redemption, then look elsewhere because this isn't it.

If you're looking for a puzzle solving murder mystery, then you might have a decent time with it.

Supposedly, this game is a spiritual successor to 'The Council', or so I've seen people claim. I've never played the Council, or seen any gameplay clips of it, so I can't speak more information about that.

While it's true that my love of Vtm started with Bloodlines it's more that I would love a setting like the one that game made, the darkness and the horror it provided was amazing. If this game really does it like that then I guess it's a buy, since I think the type of game like mysteries and detective seem interesting.

You might want to watch some gameplay from the game to see if it's your cup of tea mechanically.

I've been playing VtMB since it released, its my all time favorite game (bugs, janks + all).

Is 'this' game the same experience? ... uh, no ... BUT, its pretty damn close - and i was not expecting to fall so deeply into the gameplay and story of this world.

Just like VtMB was not perfect and released with janks - so does Swansong, and im not sure if thats meant as a compliment or not.

I can say with confidence that if you loved the OG VtMB, you'll absolutely love this one too - it comes close in a lot of ways.

However - I cannot say the same for the DLC (which i also purchased on impulse) ... and after many hours play... i still dont know what the DLC does .. the costumes can't be applied, and frankly, i dont think i would if i could.

The Victoria character part of DLC - well, she's basically an NPC ... wouldn't have noticed if she wasn't in the game. Overall a very confusing DLC to an otherwise great base game.

Totally recommend you get this to fill the VtM void - the story is impressive and immersive enough to forgive shortfalls.

If I understand correctly, Victoria is either a cameo from one of those L.A by Night games, or she's voice acted by somebody who is.

Seems like kind of a shameless plug, to be honest.

Victoria Ash is the signature Toreador in VtM. She's basically the Toreador equivalent of Beckett, who is one of the signature Gangrels.

In the L.A. By Night series, she was played by Jessica Chobot. who reprises her role in Swansong.

Her relevance in Swansong is that she's Emem's mentor. She appears in the game for about 20 minutes of dialogue. You speak to her as Emem, as Galeb, and then as Emem again. She appears throughout the story when you return to the tower.

The costume DLC is a bit confusing, but you go into the Options Menu and it's under Bonuses.

I wish they'd let you just equip the costumes whenever you wanted from the inventory, including wearing Emem's red dress if you wanted.

Ah, that would explain why I know little about her, what with Toreador being my least favorite clan... Yes, I'll even take the redundant Assamites over the Toreador.

Haha 😅 I'm nearly always playing Toreador - a pretty face turns everyone into an easy bloodbag,.. plus ya cant beat maxed out celerity (literally).

... ironically, Nosferatu being the other favourite - but hey, love them all.

My problem with the Assamites is that with the Society of Leopold and the Second Inquisition, a clan full of religious, fanatical assassins just seems too redundant for the setting.

My problem with the Toreador is that they are the physical embodiment of everything I utterly despise about modern, pop culture vampires.

Re Assamites (yea good point), Re Toreador (totally - but hella fun to play!)

I play games like Sherlock Holmes the chapter one and awakening in particular and this game seemed cool to me. I have not finished it yet but I really love it. it is vampires and detective game together. I saw some of the negative reviews and many were simply it was not the type game they thought it would be. I personally love the characters and the story so far. Also, many negative reviews were because people didn't like the graphics the facial animations and mouths speaking. That kind of stuff i absolutely can look past if the game is good and the story is good. I also watched some game play videos before i decided that it was definitely something i would like.

Im a VtM fan, I played it through on epic store. To tell you the truth, I wouldn't pay 50 euros for this. While its an ok game and there is quite a lot of gameplay to it, I still feel that Its not quite good enough for a full AAA-price, unless you are a true diehard VtM fan. 40 Euros is about right..

TL:DR its not a horrible experience, but its also not quite AAA-level. The most janky thing are the facial animations which can vary a lot. Some people are going to be very bothered by that. The player characters have received a lot of attention, but same can't be said for everyone else..

Its basically a puzzlegame in a 3D third person view where you can walk around and speak with people. You play one of three characters depending on scene, who have their own abilities and quirks. And the puzzles are quite hard if you dont rely on the internet to help you. I played it through on my own, and I basically failed every possible optional objective xD Its hard.

ps. I really love Leysha. Yet another excellent and unique representation of a Malkavian. Too bad you play her only third of the time.

pps.

Victoria Ash is a major character in the VtM lore (basically the original signature character of the Toreador from the 90s), who once appeared in a L.A.by Night episode played by Jessica Chobot, who portrays her in this game. (she is not a pro voice actor) In this game the DLC gives you one (or was it two? I cant remember) scenes where you just talk with her. Its unrelated to the main quest.

Its not a plug for LA by night, but rather an attempt to create something special for this game. I dont blame the devs.

Golly, gee, willickers! A whole two scenes of interaction with an iconic character from the game's lore!

And they have the gall to charge you money for something like that?

If I could do it all over again I, personally, wouldn't have bought it. It isn't 'terrible', it is just very focused on being played a certain way. And if you're not the target audience that enjoy that very specific way of playing, it isn't flexible enough to let you have fun otherwise.

If you really enjoy detective games where you carefully look over every item, possible clue, red herring, jot down notes, etc etc. you may enjoy it. If you like ironman mode style games you may enjoy it. If you can handle games where, to get outcomes representing what you'd think of as 'good' you pretty much have to play multiple times (and hope RNG is with you) - keeping in mind 'play multiple times' involves performing the exact same actions and clicking the same things without any significant change or challenge, you may enjoy it.

If you're primarily looking for a narrative RPG, this is probably not it. If you're looking for a 'vampire the masquerade' experience... there's elements of it there but you'll get more of that from the text blurbs in the codex then the actual characters. Though some of the plot also supports it (though I can't speak to how well someone new to the franchise would understand what's happening without reading.. a lot.. and I mean kinda dull reading, not fun little flavor texts).

I'd say watch a let's play and decide if its the right experience for you before spending any money.
