Gothic 1 Remake

Gothic 1 Remake

Is this the final name? "Gothic Remake"? This is no good for American audiences
I bought the original Gothic for 10 bucks out of a bargain bin, nobody at the game store knew anything about it; to this day I don't know anybody IRL who has even heard of it.

Marketing to America seemed to be non existent back then. Which is too bad as I still consider it my favorite game of all time but nobody knows what I'm talking about.

Fast forward to today and we get "Gothic 1 Remake". I can't imagine a worse name for the American audience. Calling something a "remake" is a put-down in American-ese.

"Gothic Rebooted" would be better, except nobody knows what "Gothic" was.

To Americans calling something "Gothic" means either a depressed person with black lipstick or a type of church or a font. I did a little survey you see. Americans have no association for the word Gothic outside those contexts . So calling the game "Gothic 1 remake" is evocative of nothing meaningful.

If its not too late, I'd recommend a different title for the american audience.

And also, do some broad spectrum marketing not just targeted. Marketing to tight target silos can miss so many possible customers.:steamsalty:

But it's a Remake, it's not a Reboot. Why call it something that would be misleading since factual false?

"Remake" is first of all a term, that indicated the scale of changes applied to the original game. Reboot or Remaster have absolutely different meanings.

"Gothic" name of the game is iconic and we never thought about changing it.

No really? You never thought about changing it? Yeah, I know. That's why I brought it up.

This is about marketing. America is different than Europe, and they could lose 50% of their sales by simply ignoring cultural differences. Why leave millions of euro on the table just to be eurocentric?

Try reading the original version of "How to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie , by the time you are finished, you will have a whole different perspective.

Not with that attitude! But if you market it right, this problem can be turned into a strength.

Why change the name .. if the Gothic is name of the game for 24 Years ,, its an iconic game ,, Asmongold will do market enough i guess ,, but after the demo beat the guy , i don't think americans will join in hype train

Gothic is not an iconic game in America. To be clear, I'm not saying change the name in Europe, just in America. Its a different market. Seriously, a decent connotative translation of the title "Gothic 1 Remake" could be "sh:tty gibberish".

I never even heard of Asmogold until he said something political a while back.

I am American and have never confused the game Gothic and the personality/style, no one would in context. Do you want to change the whole series from Gothic to something else too? Changing the name based on country is dumb and does not help in any kind of marketing. No one is going to buy this because it's the latest AAA game. It's mostly people like me who've played the original from years ago and want to go back with modern graphics.

Your asking to change the original name of a game it has had for your own beliefs. They updated the graphics of an old game and releasing it, not changing anything else, hence "remake". It's like if they changed the names of the remakes for Spyro or Crash Bandicoot because they updated the graphics.

Also in Germany, the first association to the term "Gothic" is depressed b!tches in black clothes or their music. Even more as when we refer to gothic architecture or the ancient germanic people, we are using the german word "Goten" or "gotisch", the english is used for the other.

I assume you really want to be helpful. But the game name had been decided years ago, so it comes a bit late.
As this remake is of one of these games frome the Gothic game series, giving it a completely different name makes no sense, really.

The next thing you propose is that The Witcher 1 Remake should be renamed into The Hunter 1 Reboot because Geralt is clearly no Witch and not female and all he does is hunting monsters.

Seriously, it makes no sense to just randomly change the original name of the game. It simply goes against the whole idea of making a Remake. And in general, the name of a series is a very important part of its identity. And nobody ever changes the name of their series. Every Assassins Creed is still always called Assassins Creed, the same with games like Call of Duty, Diablo or Anno. That's jus tnot somethign you do. Especially not in a Remake, since you then have no idea for which game it is a remake if has a different name. Who would think of that a game called The Hunter 1 Reboot is actually a the Witcher Remake? Nobody woud ever make that connection.

Also, no, they do not want to do a Reboot, most old Gothic fans would absolutely hate that idea. The Playable Teaser was basically the proposal of making a Reboot and the overal reaction to it was a very big NO. The players very much want a Remake and this is what they get and also why it is called a Remake, not something entirely different.

Btw, Gothic has pretty much the same meaning in english as it has in german, which was the country in which the game was made. Which just makes your argument of english speaking people being special regarding the meaning of the name even less relevant. Also, don't think that 'america', how USA people love to call their country, is by no means the only country that uses this language.

No sh:t. Thats why Americans don't know what "Gothic" means. We don't have it, except a few churches here and there.
