Playable Teaser was ... interesting.
But I want to play actual Gothic content while waiting for Gothic.
Q1 for a game release turned somethat unlikely. All eyes on the demo now...
Actually the biggest issue of development itself is in fact, time. Take the Call of Duty series for example. While it looks like they are releasing games at a blistering pace, even those take 3-4 years to fully develop and flesh out with very large teams. I highly doubt gothic is a large team. Just try making a mod for a game and you will see that time is more of an issue than talent in a lot of cases.
Edit: You also need to keep in mind that 5 years may not have been the actual development cycle at all. It could have been on the books getting a skeleton crew setting things up etc. Then actual development to complete the game started 2-3 years ago or something. That's also a very common thing that happens.
Upon doing more research, yea, this game started development in 2021. That means that it has, at best, been 4 years, not 5. So at least get your facts straight before making complaints. They should definitely release it this year and if not by spring 2026. I would rather have a full and complete product than some rushed garbage.
The reality looks like this. By the time I start working on my first character sculpt the concept artists and principal designers have long moved on to other projects. By the time I deliver my final sculpts and start working on the next project, the environmental artists, level designer, animators and lighting artists are still crunching on the project. Meanwhile, the voiceactors haven't even shown up to work yet.
This has been more or less the same in every studio I've worked with so far. So when people say "Red Dead Redemtion two took 7 years to make" that naturally also includes times when there was just a sceleton crew doing some early prototyping and principal design. Gothic;s developement cycle doesn't magically shorten compared to other developement cycles because they too saw fluctuations in total workforce when they were developed.
Generally speaking, video game development budgets are mostly allocated towards salaries, rent, software licenses and marketing. Marketing doesn't really care how long a game takes to develope. But the salaries, rent and licenses are ongoing expenditures that eat a bigger and bigger hole in the publishers purse the longer developement takes. As a result, the publishes expectations get more demanding with every year that passes by. You may graciously allow them to work on the game for 5+ years but Embracer group has no chill when it comes to studios that don't make as much money as they think they should. Just ask Bioware how their "Dragon Age: The Veilguard" developement cycle of 5+ years went for them...
Might be an orgasmic experience if they pull it off well enough, seeing I alredy love the wooden, unfinished versions to the bone.
If this gem gets into new engine, is made any good as previous iterations and gets a mod support, it will be gold.
We will have to see, personaly I am not overly excited, because graphics is something I do not care for in 99% games, with the tiny percentage being games whose aesthetics just don't suit my taste - like Valheim for example.
Combat did look okay, but obviously no way to see for sure, till we can try it out, and I guess, that world exploration will suffer with the implementation of God of War - like climbing instatntions, instead of good, old Gothic - climb every-heckin-where you want if You find the way.
I am waiting without expecting too much, while not doomsaying it will be the worst remake ever. If it is not that good, I will just stick to original titles, which I have been doing for decades, haha.
Currently I don't really think of the game as a true remake considering how much traversal/movement, visuals, dialogues and to a certain degree even the music has changed. I recently started playing the Dead Space remake and it immediately felt like coming home with a few neat surprises alonmg the way. You can now fly in zero G environments rather than just jumping from point A to B. Previously useless weapons are now much more fun to use. Upgrading weaponms and armor is more flexible now. The worldbuilding has subtly but effectively been expanded to make the game more coherent regarding the sequels. And on top of all that the game looks amazing. In short, it's a remake that is done so well that it replaces the original because it offers all of the same and then some more.
The Gothic remake I think will not succeed in that regard. I think they have strayed too far from the original game for that- But we'll see, maybe the demo does feel a lot closer to the original than it may look on the surface.
Let me PRE-ORDER that already !!!
What happens to traditional 5+ year development game studios helmed by humans then :D
PS: I Think we will miss the human element
Games no matter how delayed or on time come out a mess anyways. So tired of seeing and reading about this. "Take your time" doesn't mean anything anymore. It will still come out a disaster. Every AAA studio does this but instead release features missing but advertised as "coming soon" so it really doesn't matter. There are no standards in this industry.
We will see more at steam next fest, and they will have a few more weeks or months to adjust things based on fan feedback.
Remember, dev actually started in March 2021 only. So it has not been 4 years yet.
Yeah, sure. Nice try.
