In the remake you don't have to learn to sneak. You are able to from the start. On keyboard it's the C key by default.

People always spot me and even wake from sleep when I'm looting or I their hut, so the sneak skill must be needed?

you just do it wrong, you click on the chest from too long a distance and your character breaks the sneaking stance when approaching it
As weird as it is, sneaking is also affected by the distinction between running and walking (I think it's toggled with Z by default). So fast sneaking allows you to walk past enemies and to sneak into huts, while the slow sneaking is exclusively required to not wake people up. Don't ask, I have no idea why it's like that, but it does work like that. Most of the time, on rare occasion they wake up anyway.
There is no sneak skill. You need to follow few simple rules.
- don't sneak when people are looking at you
- don't sneak in full daylight
- don't make noise
- don't pickup or interact with anything from a distance

I've cleared all camps at night and didn't wake any unnamed people.
Named NPC seems to have a higher alert sense. Their houses are better snuck into wen they are not around.

I would also add don't have a torch in your hand when sneaking into houses at night with people sleeping in there.

This is a weirdly specific, albeit truthful, tip.

Did you...
Nevermind.

like only good advice is first one , only thing npc is care abaut is did they see you enter/exit the house or not. If they wake up as soon as you steal item or pick lock its a 100% bug , some houses and chests can randomly argo half of camp even if there no npc around.

Edit:Forgot to tell, npc also care if they see you leave a house , but this is also buggy as f. , some times they check if you stole someshing (will start chasing if they find something is missing) and some times they just say 2 you "leave" , even if they caught you during lockpicking with no consequences what so ever...

Yeah dont believe Online Guides, 90% of their Information is basicly "That was how it works in the Original" and they never ever Fact Check if it still works this Way.

Free AI written guides doesn't distinguish between original and remake

That's exactly how it works - being caught lockpicking is the same as being caught trespassing - NPCs tell you to stop, and if you're caught 3 times in a row they go for the kill, at which point the regular rules of a non-duel fight are applied, i.e. every ally of that NPC (generally from the same camp) will aggro as well, and those aggro'd can cause a chain reaction and aggro those near them, which will regularly include half a camp.

As for stealing, if you're caught trespassing and you stole something, the NPCs guarding that zone *will* check and they *will* call you out, demanding to drop the stolen items. I've never seen the system work outside these rules, it's very consistent.
