As far as story changes are concerned we know that orcs will play a much more significant role this time around. Similar to Gothic 3 there will be a lot more interaction with them which includes learning a skill that allows you to wield orc weapons more effectively. Which is fine by me, I've always been a fan of the orcs in the Gothic universe but there will be significant changes none the less.
We also know that the women of the colony will get a more prominent role and that they have emanaged to esacpe and hide at an unknown location in the colony. My guess is there will be completely new questline. Not quite sure what I should think of this. Could turn out to be an interesting new plotline, but could result in the nameless hero getting sidelined by some obnoxious girlboss character.
Either way I think it is clear that the devs take a lot more creative liberties than one would expect from a remake.
Right now it seems they're being faithfull to the concept of what makes a good Gothic game, so I'm fine with a reboot, but I guess we'll be able to judge it fully only after release
But I also feel like a big part of a remake is to make the player feel like they're "coming home" so to speak. In practice though I only recognize the interior of Xardas tower because its labelled as such at the bottom of the video and not because it is self evident. "Some high elf library" is what my brain says when looking at Alkimias current design. It's the same with creatures. I only recognize the new goblins, scavengers and orcs as part of the Gothic remake because it says so at the bottom of my screen. Had I seen them in a vacuum I would have been unable to correctly guess which franchise they belong to.
The only places that currently feel like "coming home to the colony" are the old camp and the new camp. Those and the redesigns of the armors. And for a remake, that is simply not enough. It's a bit like asking your wife to gift you the 2023 Dead Space remake for you birthday and she gifts you Callisto Protocol. Sure, both games are very similar in terms of gameplay, setting and overall feel. But only one game will feel like "coming home" to a longterm Dead Space fan. I feel the same about this "remake" currently.
