Story is the same, better explained, they worked on fixing plotholes and expanding the war between 2 camps as well as the orcs.
They added plenty of things, including things that were cut out of the original due to lack of time and money.
I expect this game to be better than the original as long as technically it is not another Gothic 3. I should mention original is my second favorite game.
Example: Virtua Fighter 6 will be a Reboot called Virtua Fighter.
"A similar but not synonymous term is reimagining, which indicates a greater discrepancy between, for example, a movie and the movie it is based on."
Now what counts as a "greater discrepancy"? That's arguably up to debate. But if I as a longtime fan who knows every square inch of the colony by heart could not recognize general Lee or the troll canyon on their own merits than we are no longer in remake territory. We know what faithful remakes look like (Destroy all Humans, Diablo Resurrected), we know remakes with slight changes (Mafia, Silent Hill remake) and then there's remakes that are so different in their approach that one might as well call them a reboot (Tomb Raider 2013, Doom 2016). If the visual's are any indication we will see significant changes in every aspect of the game.
Now the location gets a makeover so it looks like something finally. Some ruins, looking like a temple. But the community complains, why can’t we have our crappy flat featureless area?
Adding some additional infrastructure beyond that isn't that big a change.
Those little altars holding the foci look too old to have been built for the errecting of the barrier, makes sense to me that more would have been built.
Cause it’s a video game and cool looking locations are fun? Why does the colony have to look like a cloudy drab rainy day in Northern Germany?
Many areas in the OG game looked featureless because the game was rushed and they had no time.
How is what Alkimia did against the identity of the original game? Why can’t that be the ruins of some Sleeper worshipping site for example? It would be a lot more interesting that just flat ground with nothing in it except some mobs.
Must be human
