Yeah... I was enthusiastic about this one but it's almost certainly a dead project

Hmmm...

The first Gothic game could do something special because of its plot - the rather small "world" of a penal colony below a magical barrier. Heavily scripted, so that player's nameless hero survives, if figuring out how to stay alive (no player will enjoy getting beaten up and robbed more than once, and players simply reload and avoid that trouble).

It's difficult to copy much from that game into a game with a different plot. As such, the second Gothic game had a different atmosphere already, but overall it was the more complete, more enjoyable game with what it offered (particularly the world-changing story events).

The third Gothic game is the most replayable one of the three games because of its large and true seamless open world.

Not commenting on the Risen games here.

ELEX in my opinion features an atmosphere and core gameplay concepts that resemble all three Gothic games. It's not the story of a penal colony, however, and not a medieval fantasy world either, but the post-apocalyptic sci-fi elements add quite some potential.

It had a substantial and perfect "sense of place." You don't see that anymore, because modern developers don't have a vision they're fleshing out, they have a committee whose first goal is cataloguing all the prevailing socio/political fads and making sure *they* get fleshed out. After that they try and drape something interesting over it, and universally fail with that. Then they call it a game, you know, because you use a keyboard or a controller to operate it ... and that's what a game is, to them.

An Arab Charger is the output of a vision, a camel is the output of a committee.

Dont be so sure mate.

They made this update a few weeks ago:

"Hello, dear players!

It has been a while since we released any updates about the game. The lack of news regarding Spellmaster is largely due to the fact that we have been devoting all of our time to its development.

We have focused all our efforts on Chapter 2.
There is a new location, "Middle Lot," which is 3 times larger than "Misty Valley," where Chapter 1 takes place.

"Middle lot" is divided into many smaller locations. Among these locations is the city of New Terlin, which includes several districts.

In particular, there is the "Poor Quarter" or "Slums" location, populated by bandits and the poor. The people here learned to survive by brute force. In fact, they invented their own currency.

"The Rich Quarter" is home to the city's nobility, and is the quarter with the most fortunate residents.

Additionally, there are other areas in New Terlin, such as the "Central Shopping Area", "Technical District", and "Food District". However, the majority of the city was dominated by the military, who occupied the castle, installed powerful security, and shut everyone out. Even the council of archmages that controls the country was forced to move into a much safer region called the "Magic Quarter."

Players will learn about each neighborhood's residents and see their daily routines. There are even several guilds players can join.

In addition to its urban location, "Middle Lot" also has less populated areas. Among them are Greg's and Luster's farms, an iron mine, caves, ruins, and mountains inhabited by many creatures, not always friendly.

All of these locations will be populated with many characters who will always have something to do with the main character. Second chapter has 5 times more quests than first chapter. We have already planned and written all of them, and now we are implementing them into the game.

Let's take a look at a few screenshots of the locations we're creating"

Hey, thanks for pointing that out. I have to admit I got tired of checking progress but I still have the game on my 'follow' list. I'm not at all convinced this game will be completed (and good, of course) but your post does renew hope :esti_happy:

Np mate, the game is on my follow list aswell and I have not bought the game yet. But I do hoppe that they can finish the game since more gothic like games is allways a good thing :D
Gothic games were only good in first acts, when the world was showing how strong it is, and how weak MC is. Then it becomes a joke in 3-4-5th acts, when you right click delete everything.

I totally agree with what you say and something strange is happening to me with the game Dragon's Dogma 2. I haven't played the first one, so what I feel may not be real, but it's been a long time since I was so excited about a fantasy RPG. And I feel that this is precisely because I feel a huge resemblance to the Gothic saga. I am a great lover of the Gothic saga and watching videos and reading about Dragon's Dogma 2, I couldn't help but feel that they have great similarities regarding not the game itself, the gameplay itself, but the sensations, the wild way in which what the world is, the interaction with the npcs, the hard and difficult combat, that feeling that the gothic saga gives so well regarding feeling helpless, that something terrible can happen around the corner. Obviously I haven't played the game yet, it comes out this Friday, but I deeply long to be right and to be able to feel again what the first two Gothics gave me and that is still engraved in my soul today.
I hope this comes to pass and that it is not a product of absolute madness due to the eternal wait for the remake of Gothic.

Hmm I played the first DD game and had fun for a while, especially because of the combat, but I quit after a short time because I didn't see the actual RPG aspect of the game. It felt more like a hack-and-slash game than an open-world RPG. Maybe I didn't stick with it long enough or maybe the second DD will have better RPG aspects. Let's hope so because as this thread makes clear we are looking for games that resemble the Gothic experience.

The DDDA story is messed up and apart from the main quest there are so many opportunities to make decisions on side quests. It isn't like BG3, with a bunch of talking, a lot of the story literally happens while you're watching. BUT Bitterblack Isle, the expansion part of DDDA is mainly hack and slash, though there's still a lot of story to be uncovered but not much you can change until the very end.

I'm pretty sure this was the guy who didn't want to do an early access and then just released an alpha version as if it were a full game and got a bunch of negative reviews because no one read the description. He should have done early access so when it finally was finished it would throw it back on the main page for another round of advertising.
kris.aalst 27 Mar 2024 @ 11:16am
Yup, that's the one. His excuse was the 'early access' label comes with negative assumptions so it would have hindered his sales.

The term is EuroJank Soul. Imagine a village in Europe with no running water but Igor traded a computer from a ♥♥♥♥♥ for his dad's cow. then Jaokob dreamed the secrets of mass telecommunication and wired it up in the town square. They then take turns on the keyboard until a game pops out. This is the magical property known as EuroJank Soul™. Now everyone in Europe has an iphone and the quantity is diminished. I'm not really sure how these devs have planned to capture this mystical element. i wish them luck.
kris.aalst 29 Mar 2024 @ 10:11am
Dear gods, that 'eurojank' joke is getting so old :steambored:

Edit: I wanted to add that for once we were having a nice, friendly, constructive, interesting, mellow discussion here but in the end someone just felt the need to sour the discussion by trolling. For shame. I suggest we ignore the previous post and continue with the thread as if that post doesn't exist.
