Sid Meier's Civ VII in PC only (Steam)
Ara in Xbox/PC (Xbox/Windows Store)
- The dev team is comprised of veterans who had worked on Civ V (conveniently they didn't work on Civ VI).
- It's been undergoing a couple of technical tests that virtually anyone can signup for.
Unless Civ VII can improve upon Civ VI's shortcomings (AI, moddability, etc), I'm going with Ara for now.
I'm also very tempted by Old World, though that's more temporally focused and not a stone age to space age game.
I always hesitated because first it was on Epic, and then I thought I wanted a larger discount, and some people really hated the game... but it's actually superb. Minus the combat, combat is kinda trashy in it. But I have to say Old World only looks like ancient era Civilizations, it does not play like it at all. It's more like Imperator Rome but in actually good. I'd describe it as a political system dynasty manager.
Yeah I definitely always got more of a "Crusader Kings if it was zoomed in on the political and dynasty aspect more, and turn-based, and had a much less intense learning curve" vibe from Old World, than "Civ but only in the ancient to medeival eras" vibe. It is definitely a game I'll eventually play.
The endless backlog grinds on, though. It is pitiless, and spares none lol. I'll get around to most of these games before I die with any luck.
Knowing that Old World's lead designer is the same one who was head of Civ IV's development team - Soren Johnson - it ain't entirely surprising the game ended up being a hidden gem.
Ikr. But all the streamers praised it ;D I hope civ 7 use the mechanics of ages. That is a great idea.
Thanks for letting me know this game exists, btw. Looking into it, I can see why some people critique it, but it does at least look like it has a distinctive approach to its design that I'm kind of interested in checking out now.
