Was 2D mode in the original version or only the Definitive?

Only in the S version, the 2D 1st started on the 3DS version of DQXI that was never localized.
The upper screen was in 3D while the lower screen was in 2D.

Not quite. At least from my understanding, the game starts that way, and then at some point not too far in you can choose which type to use the rest of the game.
Also the 3D on 3DS is very different from the way the console/PC version looks.

Interesting answers. So there was some choice in the original, but the freedom to switch back and forth and other QOL was the DE?

Only on the 3DS. The PS4 and PC originals only had the 3D version, which again was not the same as on 3DS.

No, The 3DS version of DQXI displayed both 3D and 2D at the same time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7B2ZDqe1ms.

Dragon Quest XI S added that 2D but you have to switch over at the church and it will make you start from the beginning of the chapter. The vanilla version of DQXI that got removed from Steam had only 3D.

Crazy how you're disagreeing with me by posting a video that fully supports what I said.
(In fact I believe I got my info from that very video)

Now because this game isn't documented much, many people think it (the simultanous 2D/3D display) lasts the entire adventure. And it doesn't.

Once you and Erik escape the dungeons (Heliodor Sewers), you get an option between 2D and 3D. You can always change back at a church, but the entire game does not mirror this 2D/3D hybrid.

Just wanted to add those extra details as this is very often misunderstood about the 3DS version and it comes up every now and again.

Oh well, maybe some day the fan translation will be finished. I was wrong but my point is that 2D mode started with this version on 3DS.
I honestly can't imagine if the 3DS version would be any better than this version. Better than the OG sure, but I doubt this one.

I imagine it's a different enough of an experience that it's worth going thru, though knowing me, I'd probably get tired of the small screen and just go back to this version anyway. I no longer have a 3DS either.

Some people wants to try it at least once for the sake of curiosity and novelty. Jut like eating fried pizza. (fried calzone)

I own it on Switch, and it was swappable there, and then I bought it here but it was 3D only...

They also patched this version, while not giving people who paid $60 at launch any discounts for them basically saying "Screw you for being dumb enough to buy it before we re-released the thing."

They *need* to put up a bundle deal, at a minimum, for those of us who paid full price for an abandoned and somewhat buggy version (with ****** server-based DRM they didn't bother to remove and likely won't keep the authentication servers running forever to boot) they never bothered to fix.

The OG version is a different game altogether if you're talking about that. Not only the Unreal Engine version is different but it also had third party lighting software and the textures worked differently among other things. Project Yggdrasil listed those differences.
