After looking at the others and Project Rebuild (which is neat for those who really care) I think the issue is grossly exaggerated. Yes, it is a bit of a downgrade but it isn't particularly bad. The foliage seems to be the biggest change while shadows and post processing would need a direct side by side comparison to really notice.
I was expecting some Xenoblade Chronicles type situation due to Nintendo hardware, which this is clearly not of that severity. As someone who loves old school games, notably JRPGs which would be the case for most people playing this..., I don't think most will care too much about this issue. The fact they didn't do a better port is a bit of a bummer but if the rest turns out good it hardly matters. A perfect example of a mountain out of a molehill.
Not sure the mountain/molehill is as adequate a metaphor as you'd like. From my point of view, blockier character models and low polygon environments stand out like a sore thumb but hey, if you can enjoy this version for not knowing any better then I'm happy for you. The orginal release was gorgeous and an artistic and technical achievement in every way so the thought of them deliberately deprecating that quality like they've done with so many of their pixel classics just to favor the handheld/mobile segment is deeply upsetting.
The way I see it, being short changed by a publisher who could more than afford to do this game justice on PC really stings.
It's always the PC platform getting screwed over and being treated as a third rate market. If it were up to me, they wouldn't get away with this crap and can ♥♥♥♥ right off.

That said, I prefer the character art of the original over the more cartoony anime designs of the definitive edition.
It's a relevant metaphor considering this is an older game, a JRPG at that, and thus people playing it aren't necessarily looking for bleeding edge visuals. Better visuals are, of course, nice but not exactly the goal here. The differences here, in particular, are not significant so its not really that big of a deal. Sure, they could have done a better job but like the example given prior or some of Square's other ports... it could certainly be worse. Dubbing it a "shoddy port" is certainly an exaggeration of the situation, even though I do agree they could have done better since the other assets do already exist and this is the PC platform of all things.
Maybe you're misremembering the original because you seem to feel the difference is staggering. Also lets completely toss the claim "technical achievement" as it was never, ever, anything of the sort.

Facts, all they added vs a small graphic downgrade?
Ill take all the new stuff any day over slightly better graphics!
