He's pretty flamboyant, and earlier on when he was introduced, I got the impression he could be a weak supporting type character, more there for comic relief (think Quina from Final Fantasy IX), but wow was I wrong. Not only was I wrong but I was SO wrong; he's one of the stronger characters IMO (and this is hard to say since honestly ALL of the characters are just really REALLY good down to the last one, as the characters are one of the game's strong points). He did add some comic relief but that wasn't his sole role. He added a LOT of spirit and support for the rest of the cast and it was a nice surprise.
The other character I sort of though this was about was Veronica. I though she'd be the typical annoying and assertive little child and again while she DID cover some of those personality check boxes, there was SO much more the the characters in this game.
Did Sylvando make me feel weird? No, because the game was fun and the character was fine. Did I notice he was a bit eccentric? Yes. Was it a problem? No.
If someone is "weirded out" by Sylvando's character, they are a tad homophobic at the very least. Don't really care if all the bigot incels wanna come out of the woodwork and argue with me on this, I probably just won't respond :). If you think all homosexuality needs to be confined behind closed doors, then yes you're homophobic.
I think Slyvando is great. He isn't tropey or a caricature. Remember when he helped everyone with his boat? The part right before that he suggests running along the roof to avoid the guards. That one bit of mundane (more or less) dialogue from what COULD BE a caricature of an actual human being delivered in such a matter of fact way was spot on and exactly the type of manner that characters outside the norm, so to speak, should be presented. He put forth a plan that anyone could have put forth which just shows he is part of the group and he did it very naturally. Slyvando is funny, strong, capable, and totally down for his friends. I love him and everyone else in the cast so far. I am playing this alongside DQIV on my phone and just having so much fun right now. I got Dragon Warrior for free waaaaay back when Nintendo was giving it away with new subscriptions of their magazine and it has just been a marvelous joy going back through these games I've only visited occasionally in my gaming career. Such good hearted, honest games these are.
he is a rare example of a feminine male character. using the stereotyped whips which are usually feminine weapons. knives and swords which are usually masculine weapons.
overall I can see why people cringe from him. but at the same time I think he expresse the better side of weird people and express their perspective realistically.
