Subtitles for Japanese VO
Please add the properly translated subtitles for players who chose the Japanese voices. The English dialog is terrible IMO and done not properly reflect the Japanese dialog. Thanks

Ya, the english subtitles are the transcript of the English VO. You realy notice the differences ...

I get that you want a more literal translation, but it's worth noting that the actual localisation of the game is a level above and beyond that of most localisations. Compare it to something like Persona 5 and this is ridiculous.

It's terrible. In the first five minutes I'm listening to the Japanese and the subtitles say "Crikey"... Like wtf is this crap!

If the juxtaposition is too distracting just play without voices, that's how the game was originally designed. Cause you're not gonna get a whole retranslation.

For the record, modders did start on a retranslation project[www.nexusmods.com] for OG, but they never did the dialogue as that version had no JP voiceovers (I have a whole 'nother post as to why we could never properly mod VO's in that version with the tools we had at the time, either). This, along with not having a good source for the original JP text in full prevented them from doing more with that version. Character/spell/monster/location names were all retranslated, however.

It's our hope that once we get our mod-loader updated, we'll be able to complete it with dialogue for this version :)

This post is wayyyy old. See updated post below

Translation of DQ is one of the worst I have ever seen in a big title. Half of the names are completely random and have nothing to do with original. Even Final Fantasy 6 wasn't that bad, they at least had excuse because of the letter limit.

The atrocious rewrite was one of the main reasons I couldn't finish the original. Was hoping there's a chance they'd include JP text in the "definitive" version but I guess that's not the case.

It's not the first time square enix did this, English text in ff14 is an adaption instead of translation. Other companys aren't any better, ni no kuni change the name of most characters and locations for no obvious reason, and you have valkyria chronicle where platoon is translated as squad

Only Judge Eye and the latest Yakuza game did that. The new Kunio game, too, IIRC.

I hope it becomes the standard soon, that there should be a separated version of English sub for people who use Japanese voices. It's 2022 and people still have to suffer from English "dubtitle".

Why are all Square Enix games dubtitled? It’s horrible.
Crap like this is why I learned Japanese (though to be fair, I also know Mandarin-Chinese too).

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
