Mine is not working by default, what steps has anyone taken to get it working?

Make sure controller is connected and showing up in Windows under "setup USB game controllers" before loading the game. Mine won't recognize if the application is already running when I plug in the USB cable.

Mine works fine, but for some reason I get Xbox button displays. Any way to fix that issue and have it display proper button prompts?

bc you're using the steam controller config, which emulates an xbox controller.

pay note to the yellow highlighted section, or if it doesn't appear - it's literally the top response. when you use that setting on Steam, the API pretends you have an Xbox controller, which is why the touch pad busts instantly.
you can use big picture mode to assign keys to the touchpad, but that's something else altogether different.

When I have it set to PS4. I get it now though, you're talking about the controller configuration MENU. Don't blame me for you being vague about it. I'm not really here to argue about that though. In short, the solution is to turn PS4 configuration off, I get it.

it's Steam. i's the controller configuration setting in Steam.
it's the Steam controller configuration, to be more accurate it's an API - but that term doesn't fly with most ppl . So i truncate it to it's literal path in the options.

if this had anything to do with the discontinued Steam controller... then I think the context would be there to represent it.

Great, I'm not really worried about the semantics of it.

So anyway, turning it off did not seem to work even after restarting steam. Still displays Xbox controls.

A better question is, are Xbox and keyboard button icons/prompts the only ones that the game supports since it thinks PS4 controllers are Xbox controllers?

Square f***ked this one.

Most games my x-input Logitech will work easily if set for Xbox but Square, for whatever fanboy reason, set the game to work with BIll Brand Xbox controllers only - previously it was only Mickey Mouse amateur devs that did this...you know Jr. HIghschooler devs with 'Microsft written in Satanic Gothic across their math folders.

With the default Big Picture template it works fine, turn it off and nothing.
Some would say just turn BP support back on but that isn't the point: I shouldn't have to depend on a third-party mapper for games like this here in 2021.
