Either Frontier 2 story-wise or Romancing Saga 3/Frontier 1 gameplay-wise.

I would say SaGa Frontier 1, this game. Why? Because it is by far the best setting (Sci-Fi), most other SaGa games are the typical medieval you see everywhere, but Frontier 1's setting is really unique.

Romancing SaGa The Minstrel Song Saga is another of the best of the series. Being a remake for the PS2 of the first game that came out for SNES they improved it in all aspects. It has a very refined combat system

and colorful graphics for their time.

Romancing Saga3 in my opinion since it is the least awkward/invisible mechanic.
SF1, unpolished game
Minstrel song: notorious events and invisible points that discourage you from fighting too many battles. It is hidden mechanics and hidden points so the only way to know is to read the guide and make sense of it.
SF2 is great game story-wise, but how it limits your exploration is not Saga-like.

Gray's campaign in Minstrel Song was annoying for me. I couldn't finish his mechanic cause you needed to grind materials, and one of the last mats I needed just wouldn't drop.

SaGa Scarlet Grace IMO due to its battle system and how it explains its mechanics. Not to forget that this game also has more writing than most of the SaGa games.
Romancing SaGa 2 also is one of the best IMO because it introduced most of the systems that the rest of the series (with some exceptions) has been using like the formations, Life-Points, leveling system based on arts and increase of HP (RS3 and SSG), glimmers/sparks and battle rank (probably RS1 introduced this one, but i'm not sure).

Saga frontier. I haven't so many games where you could find vampires, ninjas, interplanetary travel/police, shape-shifting monster, magic, ancient robotic civilizations, super hero all cramped into one, and it just works.

I feel the same way. One of my favorite things about this game was the kitchen sink setting. At the time this the only game I ever played where a Vampire Elf, a Robot a Henshin Hero a Monster could be in the same party as a Bard with no skills.

This one IMO. The only thing that I would consider making it similar to 7 (or other RPGs that are not Saga for that matter) is that is was made by Square around the same time.

7th Saga is completely unrelated to this series; it was called "Elnard" in Japan.

I mean personally SaGa Frontier is my favorite game in the series. It took all the gameplay refinements that came along in the Romancing SaGa games and reincorpated the multiple races from the original SaGa games. The multiple scenario aspect is more fully realized by each character having their own route vs minor differences that end up flowing into the same plotline.

Starting with SaGa Frontier 2 the series stopped being about a general refinement of concepts and moved more towards creating unique experiences. The newer SaGa games are good but definitely don't have the feel of the old games IMO.

I like Frontier 2 and all but I wish it had been more like Frontier 1. Frontier 1 is a game that definitely has more stories to tell.

I need to go back and replay the Final Fantasy Legend games for an honest analysis. I can't imagine they hold up great as original GameBoy games, but you never know. As far as the newer ones, Romancing 3 and Frontier 1 are by far my favorites.

I've played all of the RS and other Frontier games. This one is still my favorite.

None.
Unless you're very very very "into" this specific niche, none of them are even remotely close to being a competitor to genre classics.

Don't get me wrong this series has it's own merrit. But you'll need to close your eyes and plow through SO many flaws to enjoy said merrit, that comparing sagas to classics is not even funny.
