SF1, unpolished game
Minstrel song: notorious events and invisible points that discourage you from fighting too many battles. It is hidden mechanics and hidden points so the only way to know is to read the guide and make sense of it.
SF2 is great game story-wise, but how it limits your exploration is not Saga-like.
Romancing SaGa 2 also is one of the best IMO because it introduced most of the systems that the rest of the series (with some exceptions) has been using like the formations, Life-Points, leveling system based on arts and increase of HP (RS3 and SSG), glimmers/sparks and battle rank (probably RS1 introduced this one, but i'm not sure).
I feel the same way. One of my favorite things about this game was the kitchen sink setting. At the time this the only game I ever played where a Vampire Elf, a Robot a Henshin Hero a Monster could be in the same party as a Bard with no skills.
7th Saga is completely unrelated to this series; it was called "Elnard" in Japan.
Starting with SaGa Frontier 2 the series stopped being about a general refinement of concepts and moved more towards creating unique experiences. The newer SaGa games are good but definitely don't have the feel of the old games IMO.
I like Frontier 2 and all but I wish it had been more like Frontier 1. Frontier 1 is a game that definitely has more stories to tell.
Unless you're very very very "into" this specific niche, none of them are even remotely close to being a competitor to genre classics.
Don't get me wrong this series has it's own merrit. But you'll need to close your eyes and plow through SO many flaws to enjoy said merrit, that comparing sagas to classics is not even funny.
