the gem is the final part to clean. as you walk up to it, the plane comes out of no where. if you wait and watch, you see the ufo show up as the plane attacks you, the temple, the gem, whatever. the plane then attacks the ufo which fires back, and the plane crashes.

That is called "greed". IIRC they tell you that in the ending message of the level before the credits.
