But they should be safe.
I'll admit so am I.
Although I'm probably the wrong demographic to be doing this.
Or maybe they will make the rewards claimable in the other version of the game once available?
I was expecting something a little more in depth, possibly even a little scientific. Concentrating on the psychological aspect of game playing and why on Earth so many people consider hosing down toilets as being relaxing and fun.
Now one question is does it reset my whole progress and I have to start again from scratch or does it let me carry on from where I left off when playing the Research version or does it revert back to the original version before I started the Research version?
I would agree if I knew for a fact the questions were the only thing being recorded, but who knows what's also being recorded at the time it asks a question? There's all sorts of data going on under the hood that could be saved along with the answer to that question.
The Research Edition has separate save data to the base game, so reverting back will just put you however far you were before you opted in. Likewise, going back to RE will put you wherever you left off there. I'd recommend just keeping RE if you want the rewards since it saves a bit of bother later on down the line to claim the rewards. Much as the questions can get bothersome, personally I'm happy to keep answering them if it helps, though I must agree that I also thought it'd be a bit more in depth than just mood tracking and enjoyment/focus tracking.
I believe this information was already given out when you first start up the game. IIRC it is not only tracking your answers to the questions but also how you play, how long it takes to complete a level, when you spend money to buy new equipment etc. Most of the stuff outside of question answering is for FuturLab (the devs) but I believe they will also send it to the researchers if they ask for it as well.
TL;DR It's pretty much just tracking how you play it, for how long, and your question answers.
Right click on the game in your Library, select Properties, then Betas. Switch out of the research edition by selecting None.
