Having trouble joining multiplayer

When I try to join my friend's server, there's a long loading screen at first, and then I get the error message: "Server could not be found." I have this issue when trying to join, and my friend gets the same problem when he tries to join my server. What could be causing this? Could someone maybe help me out?
