No 4 and 5 star animals?
I it just me or does the Lintukoto map seem to have only 1 and 2 star animals? Been going for several "days" and can't find anything but 1 star males. Finally found a 2 star Pheasant.

it must be just you. Herd management and habitat management takes some working out and thinking before you shoot anything you see.

Every map usually starts out with a number of high fit animals, but unless you're walking into the right herd at the right time, you'll likely not find them quickly. I watched all my pheasant flocks every year for 6 in-game years. Every year, there was at least one that either had 5 stars or at least 5 star potential. They are there, you just need to find them.

do 5 star pheasants look different from one star ones?
I only noticed antlered animals look different with higher star rating.

They look pretty much the same. Unless you are playing on Ranger, use hunter sense. You will want to look out for 2 and 3 star adults, as well as 4 star matures. In my experience, most 5 star pheasants (I've seen about a dozen since I started playing on the map), they go from 1 star young to 2 star adult > 3 star adult > 4 star mature > 5 star mature.

if they look the same then what's the point? any star will look just as good on display....

I might be wrong, but there actually differences which are visible, when you take a CLOSE look at them, like on the trophy stand or in the "kill screen" (where you can take a detailed look, too).
But the differences are not easily noticeable through the binocular.

Boars have bigger tusks, the more stars they have, per example.

How does the fresh start of a NEW, FRESH map work?
From my observations (which might be wrong) all animals seem to start in a basic state, like e.g. young or adult (with a rather low score). A herd has to live "through" some life circles, before the good genes start to come up more noticeable (i.e. high scoring individuals are available).

Or is that wrong and the map CAN indeed spawn 5star matures, right from the start of a fresh, new map, in ANY part of the map (I am not talking about the areas you have to unlock, which come with high star animals, per se)?

I am pretty sure when you enter the map for first time, there is a rng roll of fitness, age, and rare fur for those with them across all animals, thats your start point. I've always had mixed bag on every map since game launched,

Nez Perce, Matariki and newest map I have seen a 5 star on first day outside of private lands.
