What am I missing this time?
Can't load .223 hollow points in my Steyr Scout for badgers, .223 hollow points are the only tier 3 ammo I could find and the Scout is the only .223 I could find. I understand why I can't load buckshot into a bird gun for the break open perks, but I guess I must be missing something with the badger hunt.

So you have the Steyr equipped in your inventory and you've managed to load up with ammo so far in the game ok?

EDIT: the hollow point .223s ammunition you have to buy; have you bought some, and understood using F in the storage menu to change ammo?

EDIT 2 - why does it have to be the .223? I don't remember that mission. Which one is it please?

There are 2 badger missions, they are tier 3 animals.

not helpful; what map please?

Turns out it doesn't matter what map. You should equip the Steyr Scout, then press F to load ammo, then click the first ammo box, fill it with FREE ammo. Done.

Yes and yes. But this isn't COTW or tHC, tiers are a helpful guide as to suitable weapons and ammunition. You don't actually need to use a .223 (all three ammo types are rated fine for badger despite one being listed as tier 3) The .30-30 with standard ammunition will do the job just fine.

Have a look in the encyclopedia or on the Toolbox at what energy levels badgers (or any animal) can be shot with.

And - had you ever bought the HP ammo or not?

I'm unclear what the question/problem is. Sounds like OP is having trouble equipping/selecting some purchased ammo in the Steyr Scout? My first thought was that perhaps the wrong calibre of ammo was purchased, which means it wouldn't show up as an option. I've done that before. My next thought was maybe the mechanics of equipping/selecting purchased ammo is a bit confusing (and I agree that it takes getting used to)?

Either way, the default ammo with the Steyr Scout should work; same with the Grandpa's old rifle and its default ammo.

Yes I have purchased the other 2 ammo types in .223. No problem loading the default ammo in any weapon. I want to select the hollow points which are the only tier 3 ammo in the game, but when I select the first ammo slot, the "equip" option is grayed out. Anyway, thanks Alf Tupper, it looks like any .223 will work and not lose me a hunt star.

When you say you select the first ammo slot, is it gray BEFORE you select it? Before you select it, does it already have ammo? Just to be clear, you are pressing F and then clicking on the ammo slot, right?

This sounds like you're encountering a bug. I just tried it with the same rifle and ammo on my own save file and it worked without issue, so not quite sure what happened there. Please report it to our community bug database with your save file attached, as described here:

As a side note, the break-action perks CAN be levelled up using buckshot and slugs--just double-checked it on an older save file of mine as well. All that matters is that the gun used is indeed a break-action shotgun.

Moving this topic to Bugs & Tech Support.
