Recommended Rifle for Wild Boar
Just made the leap over to Transylvania and finding boar difficult to take down. I started with a 6.5 Creedmore and quickly moved up to the .308 Monobloc, but still having a bit of trouble.

I snuck up in most cases under 60 yards and tried dead on heart shots as well as broadside through the front quarters for a double lung shot. Out of roughly 6 attempts with the.308, four have run off leaving the "small amount of blood animal survived" blood splatter and two I managed to get "medium amount, clear" and tracked them for a loooong ways before they finally went down.

Do I get a different rifle or improve my aim? I have somewhere around 130 kills under my belt, so I'm not inexperienced. Each shot I took was solidly in the area where the bullet should devastate the lungs.

I'm just getting started on that map, have no idea what animals to expect, aside from geese and boars and jackals. Thanks for the reccy!

I'm using the Steyr (.300 Win Mag) for every hog and most deer species in the game. This is possible since the new ammo options became a thing in WOTH.

what did you see for energy levels for each shot? That should answer your question right away.

Between 2900-3100 with the .308

Any hog has extremely thick hide, so it can be expected they might be hard to take down.

In real life they go down just fine with an AR, not sure why I'm having trouble with a .308 in the game

30-06 was and is my choice in Transy for them and red deer.
yes, irl a .308 is quite enough.
As the second caliber i choose mostly the .223 for roe deer and smaller animals.

Having much more success with the 30-06. Speaking of rifles, what ammo should I be using? I see that it each caliber has 3x different options for ammo, one free option and two paid, but the differences between their efficacy are not explained as far as I can tell.
All I've ever used is the free option; is there a compelling reason to pay for it?

I've been shooting the free ammo for a year and a half, no complaints. What decides it for me is matching the right rifle to the target in terms of the energy level of the impact. The encyclopedia lists that basic data. Many players have made their own charts/spreadsheets. All other data subjects on ballistics are out of my domain; ask the Huntress, or check her posts here - great stuff!

I would leave the 180 grain standard ammunition in. It costs nothing and is the most universal in my opinion.

yep, in most calibers (ingame) the standard is the one with the most power or effectiveness.
for the 30-06 i use only this (180gr) and the weakest (150gr i think) for smaller animals or short distances to reduce meat loss.
The "hollow point" cartdrige i leave out.

My personal favourite at the moment is 9.3x62 in the plastic pointed version intended for game class 5. Pigs, deer, no long escapes or searching in dense vegetation. Problem-free hunting even without a dog.

yep, i watched your hunt at a red deer yesterday with that rifle when i joined you Online ;-)
I had the 30-06 but was´nt in the right position. The 30-06 will do it too but the shot has to be good placed and not to much angled; max distance 150m for me. But its versatile down to roe deer when using long distances and the smaller bullet. Wished we have a Mauser or Steyr in this caliber because the worse accuracy of Remingtons ingame is noticable at longer distances.

For long ranges in the mountains hunting goats or wolves i prefer not anymore the 6.5creedmore and switched back to the .270 Monoblock.

Yes, it's a shame that WOHT multiplayer doesn't have a chat. Otherwise we could have exchanged a few words. I also shot the 9.3 at 150 meters. Unfortunately, the deer didn't come out of the woods in response to your calls. But I had a good view between the trees and was able to make a clean shot. The flight was not very far, right into the middle of the clearing. But I also like to use the .30-06 700, which is also reliable.
