Best Deer Rifle?
I came across an article in the Bangor Daily News
(https://www.bangordailynews.com/2025/02/04/outdoors/outdoors-contributors/the-best-deer-rifle-joam40zk0w/) on the best deer gun; this is a small quote from it:
"Gun writer Jim Allard says that the .35 Remington was introduced in 1906. He says that this rifle is “the best all-around game rifle for the northern tier of the United States. A great choice for Mainers hunting deer, black bear or moose.”
"Better yet, he says that it has far better knock down power than the .30-30 under any conditions and at any range. He calls it a “practical choice for most North American big game.”
"Now you know, finally. The best Maine deer rifle is a lever action Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. Today, according to Allard, only Marlin manufactures the lever action gun in .35 Remington."

What do you think? :EricB:

Years ago I used to shoot with a friend who had a 336 in .35 Rem. I was shooting my 336 in .30-.30. It's been years, but he was shooting a heavier bullet, 200 gr if I recall.

Yeah I was impressed with it. Like a 30-30 but with more pop. I like to call the .30-.30 a 'brush gun', but the .35 Rem is ever better at it I reckon.

My main concern today would be sourcing brass for it.
It depends on the type of deer. For

- tini Deer like Roe Deer 5,6x57 with 75 grain Projectile

- smaller deer like Whitetail 7x57 with 140 grain Projectile

- bigger Deer like Red Deer .30-06 with 180 grain Projectile

- larger Deer like Moose 9,3x62 or .375 H&H with 286 or 300 grain Projectile

is considered optimal without overkill.

With the stronger cartridges you can shoot all weaker types of deer too. I think the .35 Remington will do it too at shorter, reasonable ranges.
