What's new?
So I bought this game when it came out and wasn't really impressed, not touched it since 2022.
Has it had much love put into it since then?
Any new interesting features?

Not sure, since I only started playing in December 2024. But here is the latest from the devs:
Maybe this helps!? Welcome back, hope you enjoy the game. :WOTHWhiteDeer:

Why not play it? Or read the change logs from since you stopped playing?

You've not really played it then; I certainly would encourage you to re-install!

You can check out patch notes on the main menu. I think that is where I saw it.

Game has received dozens of updates since launch, including, but not limited to:
- 4 paid DLC maps (Alaska, Africa, New Zealand, Scandinavia)
- rare fur variations for multiple species
- compound bows, crossbows and a paid DLC pack that includes a recurve bow
- portable tripod stands
- free and paid UTVs
- a free hunt mode that lets you play as any character at the expense of not being able to do missions and collectibles
- multiple quality of life improvements to various game modes and systems

For more detailed info, you can check the News section of this community hub for all patch notes.
Reinstalled and enjoying it so far :)

Nice! Since it's been a long time since you played last, I recommend starting a brand new save file in Story mode, Nez Perce Valley. (The first few Missions up to Hollywood or so are basically the tutorial.) Have fun!
That's exactly what I did :) I had forgotten a whole bunch of stuff. One thing I am still a little confused about is the Tier of weapons for the Tier of animals.
They're not -strict- are they? Because the first mission has me hunting badgers with Granpa's Old Rifle which is 4-5, but Badgers are 3 right?

Grampa's old rifle, my favorite, had an upgrade when they refined all of the ballistics and became a double-tiered weapon. Yes, of course you can hunt any animal with any rifle. The trick is, if you don't match the tiers, rifle/animal, you're probably not going to get a five star hunting rating on that one. The animal can be a 5 star, but the wrong rifle will most likely bring the hunt down a notch; but not the animal's rating.
Now on this next point I'm not sure; if you fire a tier 6 weapon at a long distance at a 5 tier animal and the calculated energy impact is in "the green zone" I think you can still get a 5* hunt.
Good Hunting!:WOTH:

Ah that makes sense because I saw a website that showed the "green" zone for hunting different animals with different tier weapons!

I got burned by this once. I was so excited to see a 5-star that I forgot and used the wrong weapon, and lost a star.

And yes, this should be bookmarked by all players:

You can also collect your own per-rifle data using the practice range with Hunter Sense enabled, including hit energy indicator (turning this on when targeting an animal will tell you at a glance if you fall within the recommended hit energy).

...if you fire a tier 6 weapon at a long distance at a 5 tier animal and the calculated energy impact is in "the green zone" I think you can still get a 5* hunt.

I am fairly certain that this is how it works.

The tiers are more of a guideline than an actual rule. What matters for the hunt rating is the amount of meat loss, and what matters for getting a successful kill is achieving significant amount of damage to at least one vital organ--both of which are determined by shot placement and how much energy the bullet has when it hits. The gun tiers basically group together guns that will reliably achieve the right hit energy for animals of a certain size (animal tiers), when used from around 200-300 m. While there are missions that require longer shots, as stated in the tutorial, even 200 m is quite far for an ethical shot.

In general, if you match the tier of the gun (and ammo) to the tier of the animal and place your shot correctly from 300 m or less, you will get a reliable kill with minimal meat loss and 5 star hunt rating. However, using a higher tier rifle on a smaller tier animal can also work, you just need to be farther away (because the bullet loses energy as it travels). Likewise, you can achieve a good shot with a lower tier gun on a higher tier animal, provided you are very, VERY close. But matching rifle/ammo tier to animal tier is a lot less of a hassle.
How do the bow and crossbow come into this? Do they have energy ratings just like bullets?

Yes. Go to the store and look at the arrows, their energies are listed there. When you take an animal with an arrow you'll see the same "green zone", but adjusted for arrows. Keep your shots under 50 yards and you should be fine with a properly rated bow..
