I purchased both at the same time, and started with WotH. After a couple of hundred hours in WotH I tried CotW and within half an hour had refunded it. I suspect it's largely a matter of which game you start with seriously, but I found the following with CotW compared to WotH:
- The guns look HORRIBLE
- The scope while aiming down sights looks HORRIBLE
- Your hands look HORRIBLE
- The bullet-cam looks HORRIBLE
- The animals sound HORRIBLE
- The visual cues for tracks and calls are absurdly obtrusive and cluttered (HORRIBLE)
Individually, these items are all quite small. Put them together, and that's the majority of what you are actually interacting with when you play. /shrugUpdate (Mar 22, 2025): I have given CotW some more time, and I can definitely appreciate what it does better: beautiful graphics that are not at all grainy or pixelated, a much cleaner and more customisable UI, and of course, far more in the way of DLCs including a snow map (Medved). But to me, WotH presents the better hunting experience because the animal models, sound design and behaviour, as well as the weapon graphics and ballistics, are all far superior. I am very glad that I have both titles in my library! :)
I was in at the beginning with COTW and also with WOTH; I tried going back to COTW a few months ago, and really didn't like it compared to WOTH, which I think is the better of the two game systems. That's an opinion obviously!
There's plenty to do in WOTH, and perhaps the changes to herd management that are due in March will make it more fulfilling. However there are suspicions that the game has possibly peaked, and won't get much further development - just my hunch, no real proof of this.
I'd put it like this, that WOTH is the more authentic hunting experience. I prefer the rifles, scopes, animal models and behavior, ballistics and penetration models.
COTW on the other hand is a better gaming experience. The game play loops are more fun, it tracks statistics, and has far more content -- reserves, weapons, kit and animal variety.
In the end I think if you dig hunting games you should have both. Which one is more suited to you is hard to say.
So consider yourself jumped!
I have a real hunt, and then go for a long hike, and take pictures, and it's as real as hunting sims get.
Lastly, "real life" hunting is not on my bucket list, and I can't go hiking in the woods anymore, so WOTH is perfect.
To each their own. You do you bud, glad you like it.
You don't have to explain yourself, really, it was the OP I responded to.
Comparisons get tiring, as it's really a matter of to each his own. I've bought all the hunting games, so I support all the hunting games, and it's great that we still have so many choices, a condition I hope does not change, and all the hunting games are carried forward so we can all enjoy their variety. For me, WOTH is simply more enjoyable to play, and I enjoy the exchange of ideas here on this forum.
