So in the scope view you press X to mark where you aim at red but can only have one at a time.
Or in the scope you press and Hold X to mark it blue and you can have as many blue icons as your pc can handle.
I'm a big fan of using the long hold blue marker, as I find I mistakenly hit the x key pretty regularly which means I've then lost the original spot I marked. Since you can have many blue markers, you won't ever "lose" one with a mistaken key press. When you are done with a set, you can clear them all in map mode by mousing over any one, and pressing space (or whatever key/button is displayed in the context help). You can also clear then in first person, but it's more tedious (looking directly at a blue marker and long-pressing x will clear it).
