First, you're not stating enough details; please include the map, the mission, maybe a screenshot or two, details will help others to figure out what's up.
You can't restart a mission, but you can't really mess them up either - some have specifics, but generally you can take a mission, and then just let it stay there until you want to try again. It's been too long since I started, I have no idea where you are or what's up.
Since you just started, I need to ask you, how exactly are you looking for animals? If you are just walking around, you're spooking every animal within earshot. You have to move by walking 30-50m, and then pause to look and listen for animal signs, then repeat this behavior. If you're just staying in one spot, your encounters will depend on other factors; time of day, location, weather, etc. If you're not where they are, or where they travel to and from, you won't see them.
Look in the Encyclopedia for animal behaviors for your chosen animal; check their times for eating. sleeping, etc.
Had you come across any badger tracks? Do you know about Hunter's Sense?
Don't be afraid to ask, just give us enough to work with.
Yeah this is about the first mission .. there are thousands of badgers .. you will hear growls .. stop moving around and bring up the binoculars and look for them they will be moving around or still will be kind of white mostly as compared to the other terrain..
If you overhunt and area its like real life .. leave the area sleep then come back .. BE QUIET when you approach a hunting area don't walk UPRIGHT crouch all the time use CNTRL to do a fast crouch or a creep crouch .. .when within 200 yards of the badger area and this applies to any hunting area do a slow crouch creep movement constantly look around as you CREEP to the stand you will kill some before you even get in it .. you can hide in a bush and just wait too... such as a bush that is up hill so you can see a large area with the wind in your face .. so your scent is not blowing towards where you are hunting ..
