Story mode order
Is there an intended order for playing through the different stories/maps? Also can you play them simultaneously? (eg. Start in Nez Perce, do half of the story missions, then start Aurora Shores, do half of those missions, then come back to Nez perce and pick up where you left off?)

You have to do the first 4 or 5 missions in Nez Perce as kind of a tutorial to gain access to the other maps. After that you can play the stories in any order, on any map, and jump back and forth between them at will.

You can choose whatever order you like, but it's better not to play Matariki story before you finished Nez and Alaska since there are some connections.
You can switch from map to map no, game saves completed tasks.

You can switch maps whenever you like without any issues. Time only passes in whatever map you are playing on and the other maps basically get frozen in time until you come back to them. As the others have pointed out, the first 5 or so missions on Nez Perce are required to unlock the in-game shop, other maps and other modes, and the story of Matariki Perk contains spoilers for the endings of Nez Perce and Aurora Shores.

Also, there is a side mission in Tikamoon Plains that references the main character from Nez Perce, but otherwise that map is very standalone.

don't play story, unless you like endless useless dialogues.
