Is The Remington 673 Completely Useless?
I want to like this rifle but every time I take it out for a hunt, it feels completely anemic especially considering it's supposed to be a tier 6 weapon. I thought that due to its lower power, it could work as a sort of general purpose rifle that I could take most medium and large animals with. However in my experience, the .30-06 actually works much better in this role. Just to verify this for myself, I decided to see how both rifles would do on a female lion and I was pretty stunned by the result I got. Both lions were shot from about 180 yards away and I tried to make sure they were as close to broadside as possible.

Here's how the .30-06 performed:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3195519912

And here's how the .350 performed:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3195520011
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3195520072

Yes, despite the fact that the .350 did more damage, the lion still ran about 50 yards further than the one shot with the .30-06.

Am I just missing something? Is there any use for this rifle or should I just be leaving it to collect dust in my storage locker?

I think of the .350 as a brush gun, a rifle that works best in heavy terrain at short range. At 100 yards the .300 and .350 are close, about 200 mj less for the .350. The .350 loses more energy over distance, and at 300 yards it is delivering about 500 fewer mj than the .300. Lower ballistic coefficient.

It's a 'guide rifle', which might be carried by a guide and used for close in defense should it be necessary to protect the party from predator attacks, the guide doesn't hunt necessarily.

It's a little surprising to see both of these shots fall short of proper ethical energy at this modest range.

The Rem rifles got the short end of the stick when it comes to accuracy. The 30-06 & the 350 are the only rifles in the game worse than the 30-30 in this respect. While the Rem 300 is about the same as the 30-30. They would be my last choices for a load out.

That’s what I found in my research on this rifle. It’s really not meant to be a hunting rifle but a close range defense weapon and that’s why it strikes me as a very odd addition to a game that’s focused on hunting. There just doesn’t seem to be any point to it.

It also has massive bullet drop. This would be one of the most difficult rifles in Ranger. Or when you do not have accurate range info. This is why I think of it as a brush gun, short range in heavy terrain. Sort of like a more powerful .30-.30 in my view. The short barrel completes the set. But in Way of the Hunter any advantages it may have don't really play out. Not a bad weapon, but when considering it among all the choices we have there's not much room for it. The sort of weapon you carry because you dig the mojo, not because its qualities stand out in comparison. All in my opinion, of course.

According to the toolbox, 4223 J is the minimum ethical energy for lion. The 30-06 falls well short of this even if you stick the barrel against his ribs. The 350 meets the minimum out to 100 m. For the 300 win mag you are good at a bit over 200 m.

Another quick test I did on red deer and this time. I really tipped the scales in favor of the .350 as well. I moved the distance back to about 300 yards and I took a much less ideal quartering shot with the .30-06 while the .350 was given an almost perfect broadside shot. In addition, the stag I shot with the .30-06 was a mature while the stag I shot with the .350 was an adult. Here are the results.

.30-06:

.350:

So with the competition rigged in its favor the .350 does win, but only just. Once again I'm really stunned by this and I think I'll just be leaving the .350 in the storage locker from now on.

I would be interested in the lion test with the 9.3x62 if you have the DLC. It supposedly has better expansion than the 350 but I have not tested it in depth.

Yes I have that DLC. I'll jump back onto the game later today and post the results.

Here is a female lion at 183 m (~200 yds) with the 9.3x62. It was not quite a broadside shot. Edit: It was an adult & she ran ~180 m. The bullet exited with 800-900 J still left in the tank.

Well the results are in and it's no contest. The 9.3x62 crushes the .350 when it comes to hunting lions. I actually killed several lions with the 9.3 and not because it was performing poorly, but because it kept performing way better than expected and I wanted to get something I could at least closely compare to the .350. Anyway, here's the shot that I finally went with. This was a 2 star mature lion shot from about 250 yards away:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196441197
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196441306

Once again, I tried to tilt the odds in the favor of the .350 by getting as close as I could. Here's a shot from about 130 yards on a 1 star mature lion:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196442303
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196442400

And here's a shot from 100 yards away on a 1 star adult lion:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196443582
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196443668

And as a bonus, here are a couple of pretty crazy shots I hit with the 9.3 from about 300 yards away. Bear in mind I was only trying to hit the lungs so I do think there is something to the expansion damage with this rifle:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196438209
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196438270
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196439842
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196440066

So the conclusion is pretty obvious. If you're hunting lions, leave the .350 at home and take the 9.3x62 instead.

I disagree. had plenty a deer run me over and could use something with stopping power to defend myself at very close range...

Darkfalz, I thought that you might like the 9.3x62 better & glad that you tried it. It apparently has better penetration & expansion than the 350. Plus it is more accurate. It also does a decent job on Cape Buff at close range.
Mauserich Mar 23, 2024 @ 2:31pm
I mean the rifle and the cartridge is a mistake in the game. A curiosity in my opinion. They should have saved it. Remington definitely has better rifles and better cartridges. I only looked at it once and put it away again. ,-)

The Remington rifles are a terrible misrepresentation in this game.
they aren't always sub-moa rifles irl but they shouldn't be THAT bad. I'm surprised Remington hasn't made them take their rifles out of the game at this point.
Warlord829895 Mar 24, 2024 @ 2:17am
This rifle is Crap. In rl it's a very interesting and rare gun. I dont know why the Remington Rifles in this game are so low performing. Even the Remington 700 or the 7600. I owned and shot some Remington in rl and they are very acurate, reliable and well made.
