You don't have to buy the weapons of a weapon pack DLC with ingame money, iirc. When I recently bought the steyr arms pack I think I could just "claim" them in the ingame shop with out spending ingame money.
The reason why is you get a Tier 6 rifle straight away without any in-game grind, so larger animals such as Elk Moose and Red Deer can be more effectively killed. Generally, these bigger animals bring you more in-game cash more quickly.
The 6.5mm rifles are useful, and I really liked the .270 rifle too.
Otherwise you're grinding cash in-game to buy a bigger rifle to deal with the bigger species.
If you need any more starter tips, ask away. Did you buy any of the DLC reserves or are you just on Nez Perce and Transylvania?
Later on, when you're familiar with the TIER system, you'll appreciate the variety of weapons. You'll learn how to match gun to animal, as the overall hunting objective is to take an animal with one fatal shot, doing the least amount of damage to the meat, while delivering a kill shot.
We'll all be happy to answer any questions. Good hunting!
You don't have to buy the DLC at all unless you like the rifles in the pack. In this case, I recommend buying (in game cash) the Monobloc 308 for the tier 5 animals & the Steyr SM12 300 win mag for the bigger stuff. You won't need any other rifles except where a mission requires a specific one. Although I use the 223 for badgers & what not every now & then.
As others have noted, if you shoot a lower tier animal with a higher tier rifle, it will reduce your cash payout. But you will find that this really does not matter. You will still be able to buy everything you want b4 too long.
Certainly finish the missions if you want an easier way to open territory, gain items, raise your perks, be almost hand-led to need zones, and access fast travel points, etc. The stories do a good job of getting you familiarized with the terrain, etc. They're not hard, (some are a little unusual) they're helpful. Free Hunt is a unique opportunity to just hunt on any map, you choose.
