I was looking to try this with a friend, is the multiplayer/coop still buggy or have that been improved?

it still lacks a ingame chat and the guest cant collect animals bug is still not fixed yet.

That's a tricky question as some players have almost no issues playing MP and others have a lot. The devs are still investigating. In my own personal experience, it depends on the connection speed of the host: whenever I played with a host with a good connection, I had almost no issues. The few times I played with a host with bad connection, we had issues claiming animals, desync and such.
