Thoughts on Alaska

I had to fight my way out of the lodge there were so many animals. For anyone wanting an easier experience, the starting area is loaded like its Silver Ridge Peaks 2.0. Exploring out further, it thins out enough to be a challenge. I love the map, just wish there was snow.

Haven't played much yet but I do like it so far. I agree animals seem everywhere at the starting location. I think the biggest problem is there isn't many water sources so where every animal drinks at the same time the water sources are loaded. Walking the map away from water does make for a better experience. Can see for miles but they don't feel so SRP then. I agree some snow would be nice but overall its a nice looking map.

I looked at the southeast area in the rainforests along the coast. There are a lot of small ponds and the forest and bushes are really dense. It works well with the callers, but it's a bit difficult without them. You don't scare away all the animals with the crossbow either, it all takes longer, but I like it. There the animals spread out over the many ponds.

I went to the top of the mountain and spoke with the (great chicken idol). It told me we needed more snow and aggressive animals!

The only complaint I have is the Buffalo animations look pretty janky. Their movements aren't smooth like most of the other animals. Other than that it's been great.

Cons for me; Main mission shooting ducks. Then another mission at campsite to shoot a duck flying over water with a crossbow. Seriously? There are also no perks for crossbow, so why do I want to use it?

I actually spent some time on the missions last night as the other crossbow looks nice. Got to say they are really bad. Racing against the clock, climbing down a cliff for a camera. I think out of about 7 missions I've only had to kill one animal so far. To me they are boring, if it wasn't for the crossbow I wouldn't touch them.

I also don't get that flying surf with a crossbow mission. I mean who comes up with these and thinks there enjoyable for most people.

Same for me. Very bad designed annoying mission. So I lost the fun of this visually beautiful map right at the beginning.

I went ahead and completed the story as I wanted the crossbow. All I can say to anyone who hasn't done that yet is good luck. Its so boring but at least most of the tasks I've picked up so far seem to be about hunting. Apart from the surf mission all others will complete through just playing the game normally.

are missions/story mandatory or you could skip them all and just play sandbox/free all the way from start?

No you can just play normally. The main story in Alaska needs to be complete if you want the better crossbow but that's simply a choice you can make. I collect all missions from camps and lodges and just don't focus on any after that. Most missions from boards are simply hunting missions so will complete when just playing normally.

There is only one private pass on Alaska so I will get round to that at some point but they can be purchased if you don't want to do the tasks.

Like some of you, that flying Duck with bow is stupid. What do they want to prove with this one?
I would bet also that none of the staff did it.

You either have super luck and do it in few tries, or you go at it for a long time. And I mean, a long period of time. Or, you end up with only that remaining after a good while.
Which sucks to me, because I'm one that likes to complete stuff 100% no matter what it is.

Also, I tried the Duck caller for the Surf Scoter & don't find that it works that much or at all.

Again, like some of you I go along & just hunt whatever I see & open the map.
I take pictures here & there of anything that is nice. Because we have to give them that. This game has some of the most beautyful landscapes & views from a hunting game.

So far all the missions I have picked up at the camps and lodges seem good (Involve just hunting) I can't for the life of me work out why they thought that one would be a good idea? It has to be a female also so you could spend ages trying to finally hit one and its a male. You will never know what your shooting looking through the scope as there flying.

I'm just glad I don't care about getting them all done, I press O to close the mission objectives and just play. If I complete them as I play its a bonus. Loving the map so far but the story and that one task are a big let down for me. At least I have the story out the way now
