You can even use a higher tier on some animals without losing rating. I use a tier 6 on mule deer etc sometimes and if its over 100M I still get the 5 star rating. Different weapons vary but you can use a tier 4 on a badger also which are class 3.
I think you might be getting confused anyway?? You can kill a badger with a tier 6 weapon but the badger will still be a 5 star animal. Its only the hunt rating that gets affected, I assume it is a ethical rating.
You have 2 ratings, animal rating and hunt rating. If your just starting out and in the starting areas most genetics are poor hence the 1 star animals. You can manage the herds by taking out the lower genetic animals and leaving the better ones. Over time the genetics will improve.
All private land is where you will find the better genetics. Head to diamond drill and your basically guaranteed to find 4-5 star animals. Taking those out will lower the genetics of herds so its a balance of sorts. Herd management is a big part of this game.
"I found in the Encyclopedia on the game. There is a rating showing that distance shots give you higher ratings. Yes, using the correct caliber is a part of that. But you will find the range has something to do with it too. Generally distance shots where the wind will effect the shot."
It shows trajectory of the ammo in that graph and what I can only assume is the power it hits at at a particular distance but that has nothing to do with how the animal scores!
