I cant tell if he just wants them to have the gear or the weapon skill.
I don't think that's correct. Per the devs update changelog notes:
"Soldier regiments can be sent to war. Some of the soldiers may return alive after the war ends."
I kind of wish the soldier requests were optional for extra influence points.
I agree. Or, better yet, let the player decide when they will begin to opt into the kingdom's wars. If they keep refusing, their influence points will drop and favor with the king starts to affect the ruling family and any noble households overall reputation. This way, you could play a balancing act of waiting it out until you know you don't have much more choice (after at least 4-5 years or whenever noble reputation really begins to matter).
The game 'Foundation' has a bit of this, where not sending any troops when the king demands them affects your overall reputation, but you have a lot of flexibility in deciding when and how many soldiers you provide as well as a percentage of success rate that your men will have in their campaign off to war. I like that system a lot and would really prefer a lot less pressure in this game since it's not a 'city-builder' game with mass population you can really just carelessly throw away to supply ever increasing royal demands for war.
Let's not forget that between training with the weapon they need to be skilled in and the constant wear and tear of their equipment, there's a wild juggling act happening here that gets worse each Fall. Some of these soldiers refuse to even train in the weapons you've prioritized! And on the other side of the spectrum, I have had others training non-stop for a whole year and NEVER gaining the swordsman skill. So here we are heading off to war with missing gear and half trained troops...smh.
