It seems like there's some kind of issue with trying to raise happiness once they've tanked it into the 'terrible' range. I've gotten newer families that never went down that far and they seem to be ok (with the same exact living situations) but the 'original' families I started with and those first couple new farmers/foragers are still not recovering mood/happiness either.
There's only one single family I have above 'poor' and honestly they should be the opposite since they've committed crimes several times, I've jailed two different members, and even put their head of household Mom in my military! They are really happy! Maybe they just really like being a problem but I don't think the AI is that sophisticated. I honestly think there's possibly bugs in the code for how happiness is factored. I can't raise most of my families at all, even granting them extra goods, alcohol and money. Nothing helps.
Do they have bedder WEalls/roofs?
Can they produce at least normal meals?
Than you range for mid happiness.
A Church and it even goes up more.
A ruling family needs at least a bedder bed, wood walls and plank roof and floor to mid happy
