*Potential Spoiler* Infirmary - What is this?

I'm running through the game on NG+, and recently got to the part where you meet the medic for the first time in the infirmary (Chapter 2). After going in the room behind the medic, where you find your brother's scarf/key, the person in the bedsheet begins to move. Interacting with it states "The sheets are stained with blood. What is this?"

Has anyone figured out a way to do anything with it, other than leave it or hit it with a weapon (which causes the sheet person to move faster, before presumably being knocked out/killed?)
