Suggestion for improving the shooting mechanics (gamepad)
Like the title says this mostly concerns when playing with gamepad.
With MKB this isn't very present since your aim naturally follows the mouse cursor.
With gamepad however, the reticle is drawn just a bit in front of your character, So making shots beyond that distance becomes a bit frustrating since you have to visualize the shot path and that can be more than tricky to do when not shooting in cardinal directions since a slight midjudgement leads to misses which doesn't feel very intuitive with guns that have bolt-action/pump/cocking mechanics.

There should be a different style of crosshair that better suits to judge long distance shots.
One example would be 2 transparent lines that shape a cone which progressively gets smaller with steadier aim.

Another suggestion that would make correction shots more comfortable is to give the bullets a much more visible tracer

I would be okay with a dotted line or something, i know we cant have a laser pointer like re4 without it being a littl ridiculous but anything, even just a better more realized crosshair would work, as it is i often miss when i think im aiming right at an armored guy, especially if diagonally shooting.

A laser would be awesome!

Something like a dotted line that starts out extrmele blurry and then sharpens into focus sounds pretty decent. Really anything that helps make long distance shots more consistent.
The current crosshair method is okay for twinstick shooters where you usually have so much ammo and such rapid-fire weapon where the mere act of holding fire compensates for having a limited crosshair system like that.
But you can't exactly do that in this game where most weapons have to manually cycle the next round and ammo isn't exactly an excess luxury for the most part.

Where are you supposed to aim? Is it the torso? Is it the shadow, ie: where the character stands? I just missed several shots that imo should have hit.

As a rule of thumb I would always go for centermass since this game doesn't account for headshots anyway. It seems to be the most consistent aiming spot.
But it still feels very finicky with that even in mind.

Just a red dot over an enemy's head to let you know they are the ones you're shooting at would be helpful.
