Slightly confused about the enemies?
So having played the demo, I am somewhat confused with the design of the Germans/Central Powers we're fighting in the trenches.

Are they normal humans or will the game slowly unveil more monstrous enemies? I'm fine with both since creative WW1 games are hard to come by, but I assumed given the horror tag that this game would have more *monsters* in it.

From my understanding, the game will contain only human enemies in it, as the monsters were cut from the game.

I hadn't seen that, I don't mind either way but did the developer say why they were cut?

I think he just wanted to keep things mostly grounded and historical.

Were they really cut? It's very sad to hear, I was hoping for some really interesting WW1 horror

I had a similar reaction, as I said earlier it doesn't bug me that much since it's still a WW1 game and they're rare enough as it is.

Though I will admit, the game doesn't really *feel* all that scary or horror-driven when you stop and realize there are no monsters, you're fighting starving 16 year old German kids in a mud-filled shell crater.

Yeah there's something to be said about man-made horrors, but that doesn't translate very well into video games IMHO. I'd have preferred monsters and humans but in a genre that's already slim, beggars can't be choosers.

Does it only classify as horror when monsters appear in it?

I think fighting in the mud- and blood-filled trenches, being constantly low on ammo and supplies, always fearing enemy raids, gas attacks and artillery, while being threated to be shot by your own commanders if you don't follow orders, is already very horryfying on its own.
My personal issue is that you are always perfectly aware of your surroundings. Maybe hiding everything your character isn't seeing right now in shadows like Darkwood does it would help, so you would have to actively listen for hostiles. Imagine not paying attention after escaping from a dire situation, only to run around a corner and coming face to face with another enemy squad that guns you down.

Though I think that Valiant Hearts goes a bit further than that. I have yet to see a game that requires you to use mountains of corpses as cover from machine gun-fire.

WW1 was horrific by itself and really doesnt need any fantasy elements, loved the demo I played and cant wait for this game to release

There is clearly more to them. They don't talk and make sounds no human should ever make. Gasmask on or not. They also don't seem to care about their fallen comrades and walk around in the absolute dark. Enough evidence for me to tell they aren't just your "every day german soldier with their loved one at home in their hearts".

It is probably extending the allied invented hate propaganda from the real war and transporting it in 2024. Charming. Greetings from Deutschland.

Horror doesn't require monsters. In fact, best horror stories revolve around people, monsters tend to be either a plot pushing device or a nuisance. This game should not have fantastical creatures.

appears that you never heard the story of "the charge of the dead man" before :philosophizing: you should look into it

There were some horror elements in the demo without the actual monsters showing up. In fact, I found it to be fairly creepy as fighting and killing something usually diminishes the fear of it.

Enemies that take a bullet to the head and then 5 shovel hits to kill off certainly don't feel human...

well, if we are going to use such logic... then almost all CoD characters aren't human either lol :absolutelybarbaric:
