"You can request a one time password to remove your security key. Go to https://account.swtor.com/user/login and enter in your username and password, and leave the security key blank. Press log in. On the next page click "Lost your security key?" and you will be given instructions to login with a one time password and remove the key. "
I had the same issue with my collector's edition security key and with the above quoted method, I was able to set up a new security key without any difficulties.
Like you, AmyDoseGaming, I bought the game collectors edition with the security key. Like you the physical security key's battery died on me. Just do what Hilgert Olben suggested.
I know it is a pain. No one likes to work with customer support <I doubt that those employees enjoy working customer support>; however, once it is done you can play your characters.
what could be done over the phone that couldn't be done through email?
dosent work
Talking to a human to make sure my account will be safe and in this day and age is a luxury. And fun fact I still use my offline security key and the darn thing still works.

yeha thats as about as secure as asking somebody if they packed their own bag. cause of course nobody has invented lying yet
Having to actually call a number and talk in person is obviously a much greater determent of scamming than just sending an Email. They will also ask you security questions that only the one who actually created that account should know, so lying won't help you there.
Considering that your account must have generated thousands upon thousands of Cartel Coins over the years that your Security Key was attached to it and you weren't playing, you should be much more appreciative of the fact that they have these increased security measures at play instead of just doing it willy nilly by Email. But you do you.
If it wont let you remove it yourself, just send an email to EA support and they can remove it for you. You will then just have to use your email as a 2fa to get in and re-add a auth app like Google Auth, or Authy.
What exactly didn't work? What did you try, what error message occured etc.
