I do recommend it. You don't need to have seen any of the movies or anything to play it.
the game is good about keeping you informed about the basics as the story carries on and there are codex entries you can unlock for more background lore. but it is not needed.
The game itself is very fun.
The voice acting is amazing and the soundtrack is wonderful.

No.

The games cutscenes (assuming you will pay attention to them) explain pretty well on a basic level everything you need to know about the SW universe in this period of time, which is roughly 3000 years BBY aka 3000 years before Battle For Yavin which is Episode 4 A new hope.
Obviously any other knowledge above that gives some additonal interesting details and reasons to nerd about.

P.s. I highly recommend watching cinematic trailers for this game, as many wish we had movies of this quality :P

Nope. This game is 'the OLD republic' and takes place how ever many thousands of years (whatever) before the Star Wars movies that came out so even if you had watched all the SW movies it wouldn't be a huge aid.

I know you say you don't know anything about Star Wars, but I doubt if you've lived in a bubble so in fact you do know the basics; the Empire, Sith, good, bad etc.... Which is all you really need to know for background since like maV says, the cutscenes will fill you in.
id say watch the cinematic trailers then dive straight in.
No, you don't need to know the lore. But you can play any game without knowing the previous lore. SWTOR is its own separated story (mostly bc it's a semi-sequel to KOTOR 1/2) from the main SW movies lore. But the game does a good job of telling you it's own story and giving you lore codex pages that tell you about races, planets, organizations, and specific people/aliens.

Now having said that, you do get way more out of the lore by knowing the lore but SW has so much lore that you'd need dozens of hours to understand the basics.

https://www.youtube.com/@TheStupendousWave The Stupendous Wave is imo the best SW lore channel. He has thousands (literally 4k) short form videos on the lore.

You can get a good background of the game's lore by watching this compilation video of the Galactic Timeline. These were videos released every so often before SWTOR came out that gave background info about the Old Republic era. They are in reverse chronological order, so the newest events are first.

I find the codex is great to fill information on what’s generally going on in an area myself. I’m not very familiar with Star Wars besides a few movies, so it’s fun to read the info in game to immerse myself. Hope you have fun too. It’s a fantastic rpg!

The only Lore you need to know about SWTOR comes from KotOR 1 & 2, for which you can find short summaries on YouTube. Once you're done with those, look on the offcial SWTOR YouTube channel for the playlist Cinematic Trailers, or just search in the bar for "SWTOR name of the cinematic. In order, the names are Return, Hope, Deceived. edit: if you put "4k" after the cinematic name, you should be getting the new, up-scaled vids.

All of the things mentioned above should take you around 20-25 minutes and then you'll be ready to jump in the SWTOR game and establish your legacy.

I think SWTOR is a fantastic way for somebody new to the franchise to experience the world. Sure you will miss out on some cool lore-specific things, but overall, it will serve as a fantastic introduction IMO.
You don't need to know previous/current lore to play/enjoy this one. Feel free to jump into it.

The game however does serve as a good bridge into SW with the various different stories for whichever class you pick. So maybe it'll interest you to look up more lore videos or other forms of media.

swtor plays around 300+ years after the kotor games and 30 years after the great galactic war that ended in a ceasefire with half the territory under imperial control
maybe it will hook you to that digree that you watch videos from geetly´s channel who put more light into the franchise , especially legends
Nope. It takes place in what is now relegated to the non-canon, expanded universe (legends), and is a mostly self contained story. It's not a direct sequel to it's predecessor games, Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, but does reference some characters/events.

The Revan DLC, which you access after finishing the vanilla campaign, better explains what happened to the character, as the KOTOR series was never 'finished' and instead of doing a proper sequel, EA decided it was better off to do an MMO that takes place something like 1000 years later. That in mind, the majority of SWTOR's story is self contained. The jist is the usual 'good guys and bad guys are fighting again in a never ending war that somehow hasn't wiped out the entire galaxy yet', and the general takeaway is 'all of this has happened before, all of this will happen again'.

It's set up in a way so that even if you never played the original KOTOR games, whatever needs explaining is explained and that's that. The KOTOR games were better, but knowing of them only adds a little bit of understanding beyond what the game already will tell you in regard to its own plot/narrative. Everything else was just dust in the wind.

one tip, there is no dark side and light side, there is just the force, and will of the force, it brings awry thing together and also brakes it apart

the sides are individual like what u crate inside of u, whatever u made it in to power of light or dark, meaning u can use bit dark side power, cause what is light side sith, they use dark side for combat, pain and rage but don't give in to the darkness, mostly do light side choices having light side alignment max lvl 5 (max) at the end of class story, if u also farm, sins some missions used for farming have dark and light choices

basically sith and jedi both are ignorant about the force

Just the general understanding - what is the Force, light and dark side, who are jedi and sith, the republic and the empire, etc.
