Game Played without steam

Can the game be launched without being logged on to steam like Star Trek online does so I don't have to link the accounts.

If you don't want to link the accounts, you have to use the original launcher/client. If you still want to use Steam in-game, you can add it as a non-steam game. Obviously, steam purchase will not work if you do this, so you'll have to make all purchase through the website instead. Since steam purchase are buggy, you shouldn't be buying SWTOR stuff through steam anyway.

could not get the original client to work kept giving me an error.

If you're playing the SWTOR through Steam, you can't run it with Steam offline and you would need to link the account if the email addressed for Steam and SWTOR are different. If you play SWTOR through it's own launcher, you can very much run it through Steam - as a non-Steam game - and play it offline (refer to my how-to guide to get it running through my profile)... and not worry about linking to Steam.
