And yes, as soon as you've linked both accounts and logged into the game via Steam for the first time, you'll instantly unlock all achievements that you've unlocked, though aside from the generic achievements, you'll need to log into each of your alts to unlock their class and faction specific ones.
As for how, simply download the game on Steam and log in to the launcher with your existing account, which will link it automatically to your Steam account.
Oh and this should be obvious, but just in case:
The only way to get achievements and the other comfort features Steam offers is to play SWTOR from the Steam launcher!
Just linking the accounts and then logging into the old launcher won't unlock anything, obviously.
so i can't log onto the game unless it's NOT in steam then it's fine. can't link it. or log in via steam. so all this is above is nonsense
Sounds to me your Steam is already linked to another SWTOR account, then you could get an error and a new account cannot be linked untiol the link is removed from the other SWTOR account.
In that case you would have to remember the other SWTOR account, log into that one on swtor.com and unlink, then you can use the account you are trying to log in at the moment.
Previously, I only played SWTOR through the EA launcher. (Remember when there was an EA launcher?) This time, I plan to use Steam. I will edit this post once I have managed to link my Steam account to EA. (The EA website currently offers no way to do so.)
