... how is this game "new"?
It requires extensive in-game key remapping and use of Steam Controller Profile emulation, but it works well.
Before this was on Steam, I used Xpadder as far back as 2014.
That all having been said, the core interface and game mechanics aren't inherently set up for controller-style inputs a la FF14, BDO, DCUO, or TERA. The biggest hitch is healing; unlike the aforementioned titles which either drop templates for the group or auto-target specific roles/HP thresholds, you have to constantly be wrestling with the horrors of tab-targeting. This gets frantic in larger group content.
I would love to see native controller support implemented; despite what naysayers like @Delta Sierra may claim, it's not only possible to play MMOs on a controller, but potentially optimal. The titles mentioned previously prove this. Furthermore, it would open up the possibility of a (very) belated console release, which tends to serve as a massive injection of playerbase population--something SWTOR could use.
However, I doubt we'll see any of this ever for the same reason we're haven't revisions or outstanding bug or script fixes to original content. It's not really something they can sell, and at this point the current team may not have the expertise required.
So if you want it, you have to do what I did--build it yourself.
Keybinds for ingame you have to paste this in the Keybinds folder so you can select it in game
https://swtorista.com/media/controllers/PS4%20and%20XBOX%20Controller%20Keybinds.xml
And the fitting ui this file has to be dropped in the GUIprofile folder
https://swtorista.com/media/controllers/PS4%20and%20XBOX%20Controller%20UI.xml
Or just watch this video https://youtu.be/6-q58QGCvxE?si=JcTquTpnFueItrWH
BTW, game came out in 2011... its not new and controllers in MMO's suck.
