What's the private server situation? Or single player version?
Are private servers even in development or does EA strike them down? With the death of the game seemingly on the horizon is there any talk of a private server or single player version (if that's possible)?

I'll be honest I've never played this game like an MMO. I've always played it like an RPG because the story really is that good. At least the original 8 class stories and 2 faction planet stories, the DLCs get progressively worse with almost no branching narratives and lesser writing. So maybe the single player mod is purely wishful thinking from someone who's always thought the end game content and multiplayer in general of this game was just there and never my focus.

TL:DR: The game's end seems near and I'd love for it to be preserved in some way, cause ♥♥♥♥ knows EA isn't gonna do it. So is there any community projects in this regard that I should keep an eye on?

The game will be around for another 5 years for sure no need for private servers right now and yes I'm sure if one did pop up it would get taken down real fast

IDK man. EA has been known to pull the plug on projects that under preform and purely anecdotal with Starforge NA, but there's rarely 100 people even at the fleet. 5 years sounds reasonable. Unless it continues to spiral in player count.

Its not under performing, its stayed consistent which wasnt amazing or bad. The new devs behind it are known for keeping old mmos alive (Broadsword inc) They still have ultima and dark age of camelot which are both active mmos 20+ years of service.

I'd say it's probably not considered a success from EA's Perspective and that's a dangerous place to be. Is Starforge NA the most populated server? Because if so what I'm seeing just isn't indicative of a healthy MMO. The in game economy (GTN) is the worst I've ever seen in any MMO. and like I said the player count for the instance hasn't been in the 200s since I've been back and rarely in the 100s.

Could be wrong, but from where I'm sitting, it's in trouble.

Also what is the most populated server if not Starforge NA? I want to give the end game content on this game a chance for the first time after I level my hatred assassin and I'd like to be where the majority of players are.

It is starforge. Alot of the populated areas are the starter cities and fleets. You will find both veterans and new players wanting to do low tier, mid tier, and even end game content (depending on which area you are in). There are quite a few guilds that you can join that have active players who run all sorts of content. I've been playing the game on and off since it was in beta. I've seen it at it's best and worst.

The condition its in now has been the same condition that it's been in for past 5 years (Don't just look at the game by steam numbers because people play on EA app and old republic launcher). I agree its def not like other mmos in the sense of you can find stuff super quickly but there are enough players to run all content. I have multiple characters ranging from early game to end game i havnt had any problems running any sort of content. There is an active discord too, to also find players.

EA had pushed bioware to move future development of this game to broadsword who are known for keeping old mmos alive. As i mentioned earlier ultima online and dark age of camelot which each respectively still get updates and been around for 20+ years. Old republic gets updates just no where near as big or as frequent as it used to. They have another few years at least if you base it on the track record of how broadsword has maintained their other mmos.

Not real sure why you think the end is near for the game. It's been a steady enough earner that instead of killing it off, they moved it to Broadsword where old games are kept alive.

It wasn't considered a success 10 years ago. There is no reason to believe it will suddenly be shut down now.

EA shouldn't be a issue with Broadsword now running this game.

Key word is of course, shouldn't.

As with any game like this (forced online only), anything could happen, but I have my doubts that this game will shutdown anytime soon.

They just made a post today that they are still working on Directx 12 engine upgrade. Public alpha will be mid-2025 at the earliest. I don't think they would be working on that if they are planning to shut it down right after. It wouldn't make sense.

Why private server? If you don't want to treat this game as MMO that badly, just don't do group stuff and think that everyone running around and typing in chat are NPCs.

You misunderstand. I simply want the best stories in any MMO to be preserved when the inevitable happens.

To clarify when I say that I play it like a single player game that's a compliment. I don't dislike the gameplay or the group content. Just that I have the desire to replay for the story alone and that is an anomaly for MMOs. I'd never do that with FF14 or ESO for instance. Because I don't care about the story in those games.

The only reason I'd start a new character in other MMOs (FF14 aside for obvious reasons) is to level a new class. Where as with SWTOR not only do I feel the desire to play the other stories that I haven't played yet, but I re-level classes just to go through the story again, I have two max level inquisitors and I'm leveling up another right now, just because I love the storyline. No other MMO interests me in this way.

Right now, where we are in the industry, preservation of MMOs and other online games is a tricky subject. It's not likely to change until laws and regulations catch up to modern times. Although there is hope considering the City of Heroes situation.

Their slowly catching up.

At this moment the always-online The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest are getting a offline patch soon. I hear that there's potentially something going on in the EU as well, in terms of game preservation. So hopefully, it won't be too far in the future before game preservation becomes a thing.

The core difference is those are original titles and swtor is a licensed title.

So it will outlast EA as a company? Interesting!
