Free to play?
Is this game free to play? Because I saw there's a subscription but I'm allowed to download for free. I'm confused...

The 8 class stories and the first 2 expansions (Hutt & Revan) with a level cap of 60 is all Free to Play.

To unlock the current level cap of 80 and all the content past Revan up to the latest Legacy of the Sith you need to sub for at least 1 month.

Awesome thank you. I'll give it a try for free and then I'll see if I decide to subscribe.

You can download and play for free. There are subscriptions that provide additional content and perks. But you can play the base story lines for free. There are 3 levels that you can play.

F2P gives you 4 character slots. There are 8 stories, You are limited to only have 1 million credits on your character. There is a Legacy Bank that you can bank credits into that does not count towards this limit. You can get piloting skill at level 20. This allows you to use mounts, both speeders and beasts. ALL mounts have the same base run speeds based on your piloting skill. No high end(end game) gear is equitable, however you do not need it for stories. You are limited to the base game and 2 expansions, Max level is 60.

Make a 1 time purchase in the Cartel Coin store to unlock.
Preferred gives you 12 character slots. Most restrictions of F2P still apply. But having the extra character slots are well worth it.

Subscribe - 26 character slots, unlock all content, all equipment and no credit limit. Max level 80. Once you have subbed the content and max level persists once you no longer sub. Only if there are new expansions do you ever need to sun again. The game can be hard to get around until you figure it out. As a Sub you get many more options to do so.

So yes it is free to play but has some serious restriction as F2P.

One further point IF you decide to sub go to SWTOR site and sub there. You have to make an account with them and link it and your Steam accounts to play. But there are many people that have serious issues subbing through Steam.

What others have already mentioned - subscribe via the website!
Also, no idea where you're from; however, the subscription price is based on regional pricing. For instance, I, a person from Poland, pay around $8 for the subscription. Imho it is super cheap and worth all the money. Also, you get Cartel Coins when subscribing (premium currency which allows you to buy more cosmetics. ZERO pay to win!).

If you sub once, you keep all the additional content for ever.

I only subbed when I finished the base story line, which took me about 50 hours of gameplay and I've got zero regrets. I've been on and off since 2020.

Depends where you live in Canada it's almost $27 CAD just for one month, I got the join the fight bundle and have about 5 weeks left on that, guaranteed if I ever sub again after that I'm gonna buy a 30 day timecard from one of the trusted sites
