Returning player; Assault cannon for Powertech or Vanguard?
Greetings,
Haven't played the game for many years except maybe for a brief week back in 2019 or 2020'ish (before the class revamp/update whatchamacallit).
Now I just re-installed the game, this time on Steam (my old ancient install didn't work, couldn't update the client and if a fresh installed was preferred, why not good' ol Steam, eh?).

Anywho; I am interested in playing as trooper on Republic side, a Powertech or a Vanguard class, wielding a minugun (assault cannon) for the ultimate power-armor nerdgasm fantasy.

Alas; my nerdgasming was stopped in my power-armored pants when I kinda realized that assault cannons might* be exclusive to the commando class or whatsitsname? (I just logged in for like 10 minutes to test performance and adjust UI etc. and the whole thing with the new class system feels a little confusing right now).

So; am I out of luck or is there a way to run a Powertech or Vanguard while also wielding an assault cannon as my main weapon? I am primarily interested in the Republic commando, but I could also consider running as a Bounty Hunter or Imperial agent/operator if they somehow marry Powertech/Vanguard with an assault cannon (though I guess it's not likely if tropper can't do it anyways).

Any and all insight about the question is welcome! Cheers!

There are certain weapons you have to have proficiency with. Like starting out as a Jedi Knight the game won't let you use guns for example. In the case of Trooper though you have to be proficient in Commando I believe to use this. I tend to play more force users then anything else.

First of all, thank you for the timely reply.
So, from your comment; I recon that I need to be a commando in order to be able to wield a Blaster Cannon, did I understand that right?
And yeah; it makes sense that a jedi doesn't run around using a pistol and I respect that not every class/subclass can use any and all weapons (it would diminish class-identity too much). But I thought maybe, just maybe there is a chance that a Vanguard or Powertech can use a blaster cannoon. If not, then I'm fine with it too. I am only asking insistently becuase it's a little difficult to find up-to-date info on the internet (game's kinda old eh) and I wanna make an informed decision before commiting to a class.

Any further opinions or clarifications would be much appreciated! Thanks again!

Weapon Proficiency: Assault Cannon is a Commando ability available for training at level 10. It allows characters to equip assault cannons.

I did read this if it helps you.

Thank you honestly :) I read exactly the same thing, but my ''test'' commando that I just created before posting here on Steam forums started the game (base trooper-campaign) with a giant .. so called ''assault cannon'' (blaster cannon) strapped to his back (and yeah, using it in combat immediatly upon starting the game) so I thought maybe that info was a little outdated, published perhaps before the latest class revamp to the game, hence asking here to learn more. Once again; nobody owes me anything, so thank you for having taken the time to look it up.

Respect! I had purchased the collectors edition when it was released (still have the OG statuette that's ever so slightly dented by the handle of the lightsaber) but I had not started playing until around late 2016'ish.
Thing is; when you been a player of a game for such a long time, the player can be both a ''legend/veteran'' but also kind of ''new'' at the same time, since live-service or MMO type of games can change greatly over 5-15 years and gamers can play the game alot, become proficient in the game, maybe take long breaks, forget stuff, learn new stuff about updates & major revamps and play again etc. rinse & repeat.
IMHO games like SWTOR is too large for any single veteran to know everything about it at once, it's simply not a realistic expectation unless the person has nothing else occupying his/her live for decades besides only one game or so.

Though.. I do wish that the info webpages on the internet were more up-to-date, that'd help alot. Most of the info about the game seems/feels ancient seems like they were last updated when I really intensely played the game.. back in 16 :D

I do recall several side missions that had been moved. An early on Trooper side mission with this older man sitting next to a downed transport was moved closer to where the crazy reporter is, and now when you buy things on the gtn they no longer show up in your mail box. I do like a few of the new strongholds and I was really happy when they added Natolin as a player race. They are my fav species XD

Commando gets Auto cannon at level 1. When you make a new character it will tell you what weapon they use.

The thing that was changed regarding classes and the skills/weapons they can use is that they have separated the base classes from the two attached advanced classes, NOT that you can now mix and match abilities and weapons from different classes.

This means that you can play for example a Trooper base class (which is now called the Origin Story) with any of the available advanced classes (which is now called the Combat Style). A Trooper is no longer limited to being either a Commando or a Vanguard, but can also pick any of the other tech Combat Styles like Sniper. That Trooper now plays exactly like a Sniper with a Sniper rifle as a their weapon and cannot use an Assault Cannon.
