Game Crash on Startup
Old launcher used to work fine. I installed the steam version. Same SWTOR launcher opens but quits as soon as I login. :steamsad:

Re-installed, restarted etc. Still crashes. Any ideas?

Also very slow and weird download from steam.

The game is not installed from Steam. The launcher downloads from game server, thus the throttled speed.

The game itself is the same whether you use new or old launcher. Have you tried to login to swtor.com and check whether the account is linked to Steam correctly?

It is linked correctly. I understand how the launcher works. But the new launcher does not work.

I had a similar issue I couldnt solve so I just tried anything and now it works.
What I tried that worked was to delete / rename some file called `DiskCacheArena`
I recommend just rename or move it.

File was located here for me
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Wars - The Old Republic\swtor

Hope this might help

I had this issue when the game just got on steam which required me to restore my computer multiple times to resolve the screen out of range problem it caused because I had really wanted to play it so I tried to launch the game on multiple occasions after trying some stuff. None of the old threads from steam and the swtor forum were helping.

I eventually found a fix though not sure which part fixed everything though.

What I did was open up the game file location then I went to the retailclient folder and I edited the client_defaults.ini file which I found did not seem to have all the options it should have so I cleared all the text and copied a friends .ini file:

//-//--------------------------------------------------------------------------// // WARNING: ** DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE ** // // Making any changes to this document will result in the corruption of // // your install and will require the use of the repair utility. // //--------------------------------------------------------------------------// [Renderer] AntiAliasingLevel = 3 AtlasQuality = 0 Buckets = 4 D3DFullScreen = false GraphicsDeviceId = 26456 GraphicsQuality = 4 Height = 1024 MeshLODQuality = 1 NativeHeight = 1024 NativeWidth = 1280 PerfTestFlags = 38781696 RefreshRate = 60 ShadowMapNumCascades = 6 ShadowMapResolution = 1536 SpeedTreeDistanceScale = 1.25 TextureAnisotropy = 16 Width = 1280 WindowX = 0 WindowY = 0 [Repository] BaseResourceFileName=..\..\Assets\swtor_

The above already has fullscreen turned off so all I had to do was change the refresh rate, width, height, native width and height to my screens resolution then I saved the file and renamed it as client_settings.ini though to be safe I also kept a copy of the file with the default name too.

I also went to C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\SWTOR\swtor after turning on view hidden files in file explorer under the view tab to see if there was a client_settings.ini file in that location just in case it was needed like some other threads and forum posts have mentioned and I did not see the file there so I copied the file I just saved in the retailclient folder and pasted it into this location.

After all that I was able to successfully start the game with no black screen resolution out of range issue and from there I was able to make any further changes to the settings that was needed.

Maybe this post wasn't really necessary and maybe it's not very helpful but I wanted to share my experience with resolving the issue since things like Alt+Enter and other fixes didn't work for me.

This is the only thing that worked. do this then change to your own gfx preferences later. It works now and wasn't too much hastle. I've been playing since 2013 on multiple computers, first time I had any issue with the launcher.:steamhappy:

Played prior to Steam... made the mistake of uninstalling then installing via Steam. Alas, this solution (including putting the settings in the ini file in AppData also didn't work, oh well) doesn't seem to work for a few of us.

Not sure for others but after the update of 7.3 the solution given by Vasdeferon did work for me so you might want to try. Just copy it to replace yours as indicated in his comment.
