SWTOR vs GW2
I want to start playing MMO and I want to commit to one so as the title says what are the pros and cons

Having played both a fair bit, my view is that SWTOR is a story MMO with a little bit of exploration, whereas GW2 is primarily exploration with an interwoven story.

There is some exploration in swtor, side quests to do, but the general playtime is spent following a main questline for your character which takes you from one planet to the next. The maps themselves being fairly static other than the odd patrolling units or repeated sequences, and no real incentive to revisit areas.

GW2 on the other hand, the early game is entirely exploration and completing renown hearts, which are like side quests localised to an area. There is also much more of an emphasis on world events and big event chains that play out across entire zones. One such example being an entire frontline of human forces fighting against centaurs, with multiple camps that can be captured or lost across the zone. There are also some maps with entire day/night cycles that affect the event chains, and multiple simultaneous activites that encourage you to replay event chains in order to experience other aspects of it.

Ultimately it depends what you really want from the game,

If you want a game with some deep choice-based storytelling, then swtor is great, but the vast majority of things, missions, side missions, flashpoints, they are all a specific storyline. And are generally repetitive without any real changes if playing them more than once.

If you want a game with a somewhat interesting story alongside tonnes of side content, rewarding exploration, and a plethora of different events that have multiple different roles and outcomes, then GW2 might be more up your alley.

Personally I frequent both, but I do tend to play swtor more as a solo experience to be engaged with the story, whereas GW2 I enjoy the exploration, but the story never fully clicked with me, felt like too many different conflicting factions and ideas.

yes I'm familiar with that but I'm asking this long term as I hear a huge number of people really praising GW2 but I haven't really heard any praise for SWTOR

For the first MMO i would recommend GW2. SWTOR is... well you play until the end. Couple of dungeons, couple of raids. It gets boring really fast cause its monotonous. Then cancel sub and wait for next patch with 2-3 hours story and over again.
this is the right answer to this
its a good game but for a real mmo its pretty lacking in terms of endgame content,
you will have fun but most players like myself just resub every few months just to get the vibe going

You won't even last a couple of hours in GW2; it's really that bad. SWTOR will last you many months, easily.

The combat is just so clean and crisp, like a warm sunny day.

I'm getting very conflicted about these two games, on the one hand GW2 has a better combat system and somehow the worlds are really open and huge and the amount of game content is huge but incredibly the fantasy setting of the game is starting to bother me and on the other hand SWTOR is SWTOR
How does is bothering you? Elaborate on that a bit.

GW2 is much better.
But SWG is much better than SWTOR. I'd recommend playing with the SWG Legends private server.

You can obtain the game from Archive.org

Pros:
Active Player Base
NGE Server, if that's your thing
Large community
Amazing people
In-depth Crafting System
No Need to be a Subscriber to post in the forums
All features Free
Plethora of New Player incentives.
Macro usage (feel free to harvest resources overnight, wake up with 200k resources to use!)
Housing System (Which can be customized)
Fun Entertainer class (Make money fast! The Best Ents are some of the richest on the server)

Cons:
SWG was replaced by SWTOR because the devs thought there were 'too many Star Wars Games'.
NGE Server, if that isn't your thing
Dated graphics

I prefer GW2 combat but everything else is so boring. The only thing I liked in GW2 was WvW and roaming in parties doing world events. For pvp I would prefer GW2 indeed. For everything else : SWTOR.

I been playing GW2 for a few days. That game is money pit nickel and dime game. Bag inventory slots fill up fast from level 1. The transmog system is another nickel and dimer. You get these trasmute drops and it's one use per item for transmogs.

trash, sticking with swtor

Been playing for about 2 weeks now you can get lots of bags off the AH for in game coin that's not an issue, bring salvage kits and salvage everything you can for mats and then click the top right to put them into material storage or right click to sell them right away on the AH, you don't have to transmog your gear until lv cap really, I mean the game is buy to play with an in game shop, that's how non subscription games work, but inventory is definitely a non issue

Unless you're farming world bosses for gold gear or running dungeons, you won't be making much money off of the trade market very quickly. I suppose that you could farm it out and sell collected stuff from salvage bags, but good luck getting any sort of timely amount of decent money.

With SWTOR though, money is easy to get. Quests pay decent money that scales with your level, Flashpoints pay decent, H2's pay decent, bonus quests pay decent, etc. You can absolutely play this game and not feel as though you're barely making ends meet.

To me, SWTOR is simply the better experience. Just my opinion of course.

the setting and story is better on swtor, GW2 has nice mechanics but a crappy setting imo. also swtor has dripfed content, it's on life support. but GW2 seems alive and well. personally i like swtor better purely because it's star wars. also i start to hate my characters voice on humans it's the same voice actor as the jedi consular in swtor

crappy setting in gw2? I find it pretty beautiful actually unless you meant the world setting in general

GW2 world graphics are great for sure. Physics are pretty good too. But during your levelling phase you are just following markers on your map of any hearts, hero points, jumping puzzles, etc.

SWTOR strengths is how flexible it is, i can be doing my daily run of solo heroics, need a break and queue for a warzone match and be right back on the heroic map to continue where I left off when warzone ends.

I've just been running around exploring unlocking waypoints and not doing anything in a specific order, my ranger is almost level 70 so far, had a few world boss fights as well, both games are good tbh

The main selling point for me for this game is the single player style adventure RPG story in the class quests. I only got into the MMO aspects at launch. But the class quests keeps me coming back every once in a while to redoo them.

Swtor for the single player story, gw2 for gameplay and being a truly mmo.
