How much of the game is F2P?
Title :V
From what i can gather from the steams very vague stuff, you get the main game, but if you want the expacs you need subscription? I think i remember reading somewhere you can just buy the expacs as well?
Trying to figure out if its worth digging into as is, or if id need to set aside funds for a month or two P:

The really quick answer is that the F2P version is really just a Free Trial. There are some very serious restrictions and limitations to what you can do with your character and in the game as a F2P player. View the F2P as a trial to see if you like the game enough to subscribe.

If you do like the game, then the subscription is well worth it. The sooner you subscribe, the better. That being said, I would not recommend going through Steam, but use the direct launcher and account.

There are people that make an actual game of playing as far as they can in F2P mode, and if that is your jam, go for it! :)

Yeah ive read about the terrible subscription thing through steam. Big oof there :P You'd think they would fix that or something xD

Could you go into a little more detail on what kind of restrictions and such there are? I know the levelcap is 60 vs the sub thats set to 90. but i doubt ill be getting that far before reaching the 'end of the free stuff'
And thats about all i could gleam off whats presented on steam.

Kind of to complex to list all the restrictions, and why they matter. Google Star Wars The Old Republic Subscription Benefits and you will get to the EA page for it.

You can play for a long, long time without a subscription. But the limitations are quite severe. Does not hurt to start a F2P account and see if you like the game. That will also give you a good feel for what the F2P limitations are and how they will impact you.

Good Luck :)

You are welcome. :)

When I play SWTOR, I always subscribe. Usually by purchasing the 2 month $30 one time option so I don't have to keep canceling and resubscribing when I wish to play something else for a while.

SWTOR is a well optimized game and pretty much bug free. It is really a story driven game more than an action RPG although there is a ton of fighting, of course.

Have fun whatever you decide, and Good Hunting!

It's a phenomenal RPG in its own right. I mean, you don't have to play it like an MMO for a long time, so you can just enjoy the stories of the various classes in the game and embrace the aspects you get access to. I would say though, paying for a single month in order to make 8 different characters that fit the 8 different story arcs, if you care about that kind of completionist stuff, is totally worth it. Considering you get to pick any race you want with the subscription, it allows you to make truly, any Star Wars style character you can dream up. Without the sub, you are forced into picking one of three races I believe. You get Zabrak, Human and I think Cyborg. Wooooo......... So any of the more unique and interesting races are tied behind the subscription. That being said, you only have to sub for a month, make your characters, and then it doesn't matter whether you're subbed or not, they don't change who you play.

I'm rambling... but seriously, it's an amazing game even if you just play it for free for awhile to enjoy some WoW-style gameplay with some cool Star Wars themed roleplay.

Yeah the race limitations are deffo a big bummer. i might just put aside some funds when i can then. At least they let you play other races unlike most space oriented games -w-;;

Slight correction OP, sub cap is 80.

But overall f2p's better than it was a few years ago since they threw in two expans for nothing. Though after the Ziost story it's all sub to get more. Only real hindrances from there are mostly conveniences and access to raids.

The 8 class stories and the first 2 expansions are totally free to play. So you have quite a lot of content there for free.

For follow on content all you have to do is sub for 1 month and you'll get all the content that's been put out up to that point (you DO NOT have to buy the expansions one by one).

Which means as of right now you'd be looking at all the content list after Shadows of Revan:

As far as the free to play restrictions; Honestly if you're a casual player and running the content solo like most, you won't even notice them. I ran all the free content before I did a sub to continue past Revan and it never bothered me:
- restricted chat in that you have to wait 30sec? between your chats
- 1mil credit cap - I wasn't buying expensive outfits off the AH so didn't need more
- not being able to see / use the higher tier of equipment - not needed for regular content
- limited storage / inventory - OK sure that one's a pain anywhere, but is doable

SWTORISTA has a great guide on the differences between free, preferred, and subscriber status here[swtorista.com].
There are a lot of restrictions, but you get a truckload of content for free.

It's worth it to subscribe for 1 month. You can immediately cancel and you'll still have the 30 days you paid for. In that time you can make characters with species/story combinations you like. Some are restricted even for subscribers, and require a legacy unlock by leveling one of them to 50. Make one of each available species, because when you drop down to preferred after your sub ends you'll be able to access 12 character slots. Characters you created with limited species while subbed will still be playable when you drop to preferred.
