I am confused on how you gain access to DLCs like shadow of revan and others, how would I go about getting them?

SoR is attached as part of f2p, so you don't need to pay for that, but for KotFE onwards though, you do need to sub to get them. I'd suggest SWTOR site to get your subscription just to make certain you get it. Or, you can run the risk of a subscription through steam.

Try to keep your receipts of the purchased subscription on Steam and any screenshots of you getting it and confirmation. should the subscription through Steam not work, you can contact SWTOR support about it and provide your receipt and screenshots as proof that you brought it and they might be able to help out.

You access them via your spaceship as a interaction within.
Before them you might want to finish Ilum planet storyline taking directly after main storyline .
