This vs SWG Legends?
What would you think it's better? I'm more inclined to try SWG legends, the whole thing reminds me of Fallout New Vegas for some reason

SWTOR is fine if you're brand new to it. If you've played it before, it's the same stuff with nothing really new, and a much smaller and much more hostile and toxic community. Either don't use chat or get ready to use the ignore feature a lot.

SWG Legends is a more immersive experience, but being an emulator of a game that was first released in 2002, it can feel quite dated, especially in movement. Another major problem with SWG Legends is that it doesn't have a very active community anymore. You'll mostly find people online are just AFK farming with very few people actively playing the game at any given time.

SWG was/is a much better Star Wars game though. Without doubt.

legends has about 1600 logins if they banned afk farming it would drop to about 200 =p

Without starting a "X is better than Y" argument, it depends on what you want from a Star Wars MMO because both games are polar opposites of each other.

If you want a simpler, themepark style game in the same vein of WoW that is heavily story-driven and cinematic and more of a single player RPG with optional MMO elements, pick SWTOR... More of a "story revolves around you" game.

While obviously more archaic, if you want an open-world community-driven sandbox with open world housing/player cities, robust crafting that's so in-depth that no MMO since has matched it, pick SWG... More of a "live in the Star Wars universe" game. If you pick SWG, I suggest you watch Napyet's SWG playlist on YouTube to learn more about the game and its systems, as it can be overwhelming at first for new players. Here's a video that's a good intro/summary of the game from 4 months ago, as well: https://youtu.be/KSOP-gIJTcU?si=86EmBK1s2yNCE2lE

I have enjoyed them both. Still love returning to them every once in awhile.

If you're a fan of being constantly surrounded by farm bots and super edgy hardcore fanboi's, SWG is the clear winner.
SWG was solid for its day, but Legends (NGE version) was the second worst iteration of it. The CU (combat update) was the lowest point of that title. The problem is, that was almost two decades ago and now it feels REALLY dated.

Honestly, because it's so damn janky and dated, if you aren't playing one of the hybrid servers (the original build or the community-modded one) I don't see much of a point of putting up with it. At least with those you get all the crazy customization and RPG elements to go along with the jank. NGE took away a crap ton of that when it was released.

Otherwise, I would go with SWTOR. The class stories alone can take up a significant amount of time and the first couple of expansions weren't too bad either. Once the Eternal Empire arc starts, that's a good time to bounce. Game got really silly at that point and only went downhill. But that's literally after hundreds of hours of content if you take all the original class stories into account.

SWTOR is basically KOTOR 3 at this point, just with more selection on what you want your character to be. But each of the class stories are unique and even support one each other throughout the narrative.

It's not really nostalgia when thousands daily are enjoying the game to this day across the various emulated versions.

That doesn't necessarily mean it's not nostalgia. How many players there are still playing it makes no difference.

There are 99k players playing Old School Runescape too. Do you think nostalgia isn't a factor there either? The very name itself implies such.

So just to be clear, your position is if a game is old (whatever you define "old" to be in this case), the main reason people are playing said game is because of nostalgia?

You do realize that the age of the game might have nothing to do with why these people are playing these games, and they are playing them simply because they're good games right?

SWG is an excellent game that should never have been shelved

My position is you're not being honest if you say nostalgia has nothing to do with it. SWG's strength is specifically in "Member Berries" and community driven content. It's not like the gameplay or story itself is anything to write home about. SWG survives on what the community makes of it, but it is not a good game on it's own.

You play SWG to experience the past and the feelings associated with it. Whether they're your own or simply understanding what others once had.

It's kind of wild you're projecting your own opinions about playing SWG as fact for someone else as to why they might play the game. People have different intentions and motivations for doing things outside of what you see as a valid reason lol... Some people are playing SWG right now purely for nostalgia reasons, others are playing for the crafting that honestly no other game has even come close to, others are playing only to decorate their houses, others are playing strictly to get the best possible gear or best looking gear, others are playing strictly for the social engagement, etc., etc,.

While nostalgia CAN be a reason someone plays a game (any game not just SWG), it doesn't necessarily have to play a part, but you seem to just see it as "old game = nostalgia" full stop. I see Reddit threads pop up literally almost every day on the SWG and SWGLegends subreddits of brand new players looking for help/tips because they've never played the game before and heard about it strictly through YouTube/TikTok/Discord. Some weren't even born when SWG released. Your "Nostalgia is a an amazing drug" argument is invalid for that reason alone.
